Share a little about the materials, processes and techniques used to create this cake: Hand-sculpted silicone mold. Cast and torched clear isomalt. Airbrushed on the back. Colored Cocoa butter on the front to make the leading.

What are you most proud of? I sculpted a medieval revival style rose in clay and was quite pleased with how it turned out.

What advice would you give someone starting this project? Casting isomalt in molds will often leave a layer of tiny bubbles on the piece. A micro torch is commonly used to smooth out the surface - so the mold has to be over detailed in order for the design to hold up to the torching step.

Very nicely done. The coloring, as you described, was actually done on the back side of this piece using an airbrush? When photographing this piece how did you get the brilliancy to show forth, backlighting somehow?

Yes - I airbrushed the color on the BACK. The front molded side was painted with black cocoa butter. The disc was propped up and backlit. The piece is about 6" across.

I also shoot on glass whenever possible - I love the reflections.

Thank you!

This has a great feel. Took your airbrush class. Pulled out all the old airbrushes. One thing led to another on the web, and I learned that my Iwata HP-Cs are having a 50 yr. anniversary! After purchasing some replacement parts, I'll be back in the game!

Excellent! I still have an Iwata HP, too. It's a good workhorse!
