I absolutely love your village. Before I read the other comments I thought you must have done it in sections on plywood and had the pieces glued down. I can't believe you put this together each year! Gorgeous! I have great memories of store windows decorated at Christmas as well - weren't those great times. :)

There are a couple of ways to make the holes.......with a hot knife or a drill. I can't think of the name of the round jagged thing that attaches to the drill.

I start with a 4 x 8 piece of styrofoam insulation. If it is not white I then paint it white. After that I decide where I want to put the buildings and make a holes for the cords to go through. Then I paint the roads, walkways, stone paths, and water accordingly. Finally I place the houses with their cords and any extra lighting or animated pieces in their spot. Then comes the landscaping with trees, snow , bushes, walls, rocks, benches, footbridges, and fences, etc.. And finally the people, animals and cars.
