Instructions

You need to ensure that you have the water in the correct place before you start to stitch anything. I doubled over my fabric to give the water a little more depth and to provide a solid line on the horizon.

Category: Embroidery

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Traditional

Materials

Printed pattern from Rowandean Mixture of wool, material and embroidery silks

What was your inspiration?

I turned forty and was given some birthday money. I wouldn't normally have allowed myself such an expensive embroidery but in light of my ever increasing age I treated myself. My husband loves anything seaside and I knew I wanted to create something that I could hang on the wall so I chose the Shingle Beach kit from Rowandean http://www.rowandean.com/Rowandean-Embroidery-Shingle-Beach/dp/B001U7JZX0?ie=UTF8&id=Rowandean%20Embroidery%20Shingle%20Beach&field_product_site_launch_date_utc=-1y&field_availability=-1&field_browse=775737031&searchSize=12&searchNodeID=775737031&searchPage=1&class=quickView&refinementHistory=subjectbin%2Cprice&searchRank=salesrank

What are you most proud of?

I love the birds, they look very effective from a distance. Also the 3D effect of the beach disappearing into the distance

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Follow the guide religiously in terms of the order in which to embroider, but then play with the stitches and enjoy the freedom to create.

Thank you Pat. I really enjoyed doing it and I now have it hanging in our living room.

Hi Pam, I tried to find your sampler in the projects page but couldn't see it. I have looked up the piece on the net though and, you're right, it's lovely.

I'm SO happy to see someone creating with HAND embroidery! And it is a lovely work, too - so your husband must be happy a well. It really is a stand-out project. Thanks for sharing!

I love hand embroidery. I have recently started playing around with my own designs. I'll try to put a picture up soon. Do you have any embroidery on the Craftsy page?

not on Craftsy. My favorite piece is "The Hunt" sampler done in 1970 before the cross stitch on linen pattern was altered so that the entire bottom third was made into cross stitch as well. It was so lovely before, and I don't know if it is even available anymore. It was originally worked by an 11 year old! I tried to google it, but they are not the same. Sigh. You know, Stupendous Stitching includes some embroidery very nicely, maybe you would like that class? I love it.

I'll try to photograph it and post it to Craftsy, but it is behind glass now and I don't know if the very tiny detail will show up.

not the Hunt, it is the famous The Chase! It was originally worked by 11 year old Mary Starkey in 1760. My sampler is from a kit released in the 1970s while the bottom third was still solid embroidery. I posted it in Projects for you, and now you know why I love your embroidery so much!
