Hi. This is wonderful. I noticed in your garden pic that you seem to have a wonderful sense of balance in your lines and shapes. Thanks for sharing that with us! :) I have a question, please: If someone were to make this out of sterling silver, do you know what the cost would be. Or perhaps if you don't know, can you advise the rough weight of the metal you used? If that's not available, how much does the bracelet weigh, please? Sadly I'm allergic to everything but sterling, gold and surgical steel, and the last is too shiny for my taste, plus it's shine might overwhelm the gentle sea glass. Oh! (hehe) Another question, please: Where do you GET sea glass ? Can you buy it? Thanks so much!! :)
You may buy sea glass although it is soooooooooo much nicer and fun to take a picnic lunch to the shore, walk to beach and collect your own. Great walk for the dog also if you have one!!
Sterling silver can cost anywhere from 9.99 to 30.00 depending on the gauge you use. you want to use at least 20 gauge maybe 22, though it maybe too soft. So 20 might be better, hence costing more money. Though the amount that you are actually using one the stone is not a lot, I think it might be about 10 inches but then ou will be a silver necklace as well, to go with the look. Sea glass, you can buy in a craft store, or just go to your local beach and start digging, you would be surprised how much you will find!
Love this bracelet and as I have lots and lots of real sea glass collected by husband and me on the shores here in Nova Scotia , and I need to start using it. I just ordered the book you made reference to "Pure Sea Glass".
Oh my goodness, I have never seen SO many comments!!! EVERYONE loves this bracelet..It truly is one of the prettiest I have ever seen , and I would really love to be able to make it...I have been trying to learn to make just simple jewelry, but I never am sure whether to use crimp beads, tubes or what sizes of anything..I bought some books, but I guess you can't teach an old dog new tricks!! lol.( I will be 77 in June) but I REALLY want to learn ..are there any good DVDs for beginners do you know????.but to get back to your bracelet..I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!! I would love to be able to make this for our grand daughter-in-law and our daughters!!! ( and for myself lol :)
Absolutely Love your Bracelet! Striking and different! Could also try Rio Grande for the wire & metals, They have a lot of variety & they carry a bunch of things for jewelers. Nope, don't work there, lol! I just find more types of metals and tools there, Often the prices are cheaper than Fire Mtn, which I also like to use.
since your supplier isn't able to supply the bracelet, could you improvise using metal blanks? I know FireMountain sells them in various shapes and metals and I am sure other distributors must also. A metal punch would make it possible to attach as you have done or with other connectors, links, etc. I think I will try it and I recommend the effort to you. It is really a lovely bracelet and would work with all sorts of stones.
Thank you. This one I made for myself. I have sold others but until I have a web site with a secure paypal account, I don't feel comfortable selling online. Unfortunately my supplier can no longer get this base bracelet which makes me sad as I've done well with this product. So I regret to say that I can't part with the remaining bracelets that I do have. But I really do appreciate your interest :)
I have learned to make my own because I don't like the bulk of the beach glass sold in craft stores. I use a tumbler and I fill it with beach sand and salt water (real ocean water) and I tumble pieces of colored glass until they have that worn-smooth texture and - voila- beach glass! It takes several days of tumbling, but it is worth the time and effort because then the fragments are authentic, at least as much as art can make them.
Some people sell sea glass on ebay but you have to be careful who you buy it from. Some claim it's real but in fact it's not. It is tumbled broken glass. I collect all my own on various beaches during my travels..
I love this bracelet! I live along the east coast so I've always looked for sea glass when I go to the beach, I especially love finding green glass it seems to be more rare then the frosted white pieces! I make mainly beaded jewelry but looking at your work I've been thinking about doing something with my glass. I was wondering, what glue is best for this kind of work? I always have a hard time finding something that's permanent! Thanks! :)
I have found E-6000 to be a strong adhesive or any other glass to glass or glass to metal glue. But you must be sure to let it cure over several days. I usually will reinforce a glued piece with wire.
You have an incredible UNIQUE gift! Noticed your designs to stand out from the crowd immediately... I've made Jewelry, DreamCatchers & Mandelas 4 yrs. now... so I appreciate special TALENT when I see it! I just signed up here; so am a rookie of sorts- Can you/anyone sell their items here? If you want to- let me know, becuz I know of a free website! [Ya prolly already know about em- but maybe not!] TTYL~ DawnnaBee
Thank you for your compliments. I am humbled! I don't believe you can sell through this web site. I think it simply a way to share creativity. I have been dragging my feet getting a web site started. I would like to sell online but the site would need paypal capabilities. The free site I know of is weebly. Do you have another one?
I love making jewelry, but I'm no where near as skilled as this. I have to ask because this is really really pretty. After reading some of the other post, I'm taking it you have glued pieces on top of pieces, along with the wire as well, is that true? & Is there a special glue you use, also how did you get the holes in the glass?? Sorry I don't mean to ask to many questions, but I would love to create something like this.
The glass is glued to the silver squares. The wire has been free formed around the glass and the bracelet to further secure the glass. The wire is not glued. There are no holes in the glass. It is just as it was found on the beach and hasn't been altered in any way. I hope this answers your questions and thank you for your comment. :)
Sea glass is glass that was tossed into the oceans. It is tumbled around in the waters by the natural wave action to the point where it is very smooth with rounded edges. It becomes frosted with this tumbling action along with the natural elements in the water and sunlight. It can take many, many years to produce a shard of beauty. There is something very mysterious about sea glass....where has it traveled, what original item did it come from and how old is a particular piece of glass. There is an excellent book titled, "Pure Sea Glass" that would answer any other questions you may have.
Thanks a bunch. I wish I could say I designed/made the bracelet but I didn't. I found a supplier who had many of these samples. I enhanced it with the wrapped sea glass.
I find all my own sea glass but, yes, you can purchase it. There are sellers on ebay although you have to be careful who you oredr from. Some sell regular tumbled glass and call it "sea glass". Watch out for the imposters.
So beautiful,so unique. I make a lot of sea glass jewelry because I walk the beach everyday but this bracelet is fabulous. Something I never would have thought to do.
Yes, I know. All mine is hand picked from the beaches I travel to. The same goes for the "stuff" at Michaels. It's important for the general public to know about the "fake" glass.
I love the look of this project. One of the things I look forward to is collecting sea glass on my vacation in Maine. Where can I obtain the instructions for this bracelet?
Thank you.......I hope you find some good treasures when in Maine. I really don't have instructions. But I can tell you that I do glue the glass to the silver component then wrap it for added security.
Sea Glass is my fav. glass to work with ! I love the colors and shapes. It is so unique and thats what I love to create, unique pieces that are not alike .
YOU ARE SO PRIVELEGED TO BE ABLE TO GET HOLD OF SEA GLASS. IT IS A DREAM OF MINE TO FIND JUST ONE PEICE OF SEA GLASS AND WIRE WRAP IT. YOU ARE A VERY LUCKY PERSON AND I LOVE YOUR WORK. STUNNINGLY WICKED.
Yes, I am very fortunate to live by the sea. :) Thank you for you comment but a word to the wise.......what is called "sea glass" at Pier One and Michaels is just glass that has been tumbled. Please don't confuse that with genuine sea glass that only Mother Nature can transform.
This is really nice. So much "summer" jewelry looks cheap, but this definitely does not. Your choices of of materials and the wire work really come together well. I'll be following you.
Yes it is getting more and more difficult to find. Many more people are aware of its popularity, its beauty and its scarcity. I use either a crochet hook or a knitting needle because I have them around.
I'm new to wire wrapping and haven't quite gotten the hang of it yet. Do you have any advice for beginners for technique and materials best suited for this craft?
The best advice I can give you is to practice with some copper wire that you can get in a hardware store. It is less expensive and it is softer to wrap with in the learning process. Then practice, practice, practice. If using sea glass the piece will "talk" to you and you will learn where to wrap the wire so it will hold tightly. I use non-tarnish silver artistic wire because it makes my line affordable and I will rewrap if not happy with it. When using sterling I find I would waste too much and it is too expensive to waste.
Sea glass can be found all over the world. Specific areas are not divulged due to the fact that many people rely on the the supply of glass to make a living. But anytime you are walking a beach be sure to keep your eyes open for some treasures. :) .
Who doesn't love sea glass? I saw on TV about a sea glass Queen who walks on the shores edge and looks for these rare gems,. I love your bracelet, it is very eloquent.
To lunashell....in regards to your comment below......the seaglass I use is genuine hand picked glass from the many beaches/areas I travel to. It does not come from Michaels. That is tumbled, broken craft glass. The pieces I find are as pure as I find them. They have a history and are very old to have become so worn from the sea, the salt and the wave action. They are not altered in any way.
Thank you for the inspiration! Lovely work. I love wire-wrapping, and started doing it when it was hard to find the kind of jewelry I like. Nice to know I'm in good company.
I love wire wrapping seaglass. Each piece is so different the wire becomes unique to taht piece. Have fun making your wire jewelry! I appreciated your compliment :)
I am currently working on a web site. If you were to contact me at simplyfromthesea@aol.com, you could tell me what colors you are interested in and I can send photos of what I have available at the time.
It was hard when I first started working with wire. But with practice it has become easier to hold the glass and wrap.. Of course, some pieces of glass or more difficult to wrap that others due to their shape.
I love your work. You have a very natural talent in creating jewelry. Thanks for sharing. I hope you continue to share your projects, they inspire me as well as many others. Thanks again-
Thank you so much for your words.I have been working on creating a web site so unfortunately I have been lax at posting additional photos here. I will work at getting some more added. :)
Your work is very beautiful! Its hard to believe it is just glass and wire. Some how you transform the glass into liquid jewels of color, using the wire to manipulate the shape. Your creations are lovely and a joy to look at. Thanks for sharing ;-)
I love your words....."liquid jewels of color"!! It's is these "jewels" that inspire me. Thank you for stopping by and taking the time to post your complimentary words. :)
Beautiful. Now I'm inspired to have a go with all the sea glass AND slate pebbles that I have collected from the English coast, especially Devon and Cornwall. Thank You from England.
love this piece just clean and elegant.
Its great to learn as well.
For those looking to learn you can follow my Blog for a new wire wrapping( free) club starting soon. http://wirelicious-jewellery.blogspot.com
Dear Wirelicious I have bags and bags of sea glass, including some top quality pieces, but have no experience of wire wrapping and no knowledge of where to start. Please let me know when you start your blog so I can become an avid follower. My email is yeldridge@tiscali.com.
You truly are a natural. wire wrapping is my favorite look in jewelry because it truly is an individual's "artistic" ability. I was really inspired by your work, and hope to be as good as you someday. I will take your advice and practice, practice. thanks for sharing.
I don't know where you live, but at our JC they have a class for wire wrapping in thier jewlery class. Check out your local Jr. Coll. I'm starting my 2nd. semester, in jewlery I'm 81 and don't plan on molding away.LOL
I love this look! Do you have or share instructions? I am now disabled and need a way to make items I can sell in my community. Would you be willing to help me? I don't have much to invest so I am doing the best I can. I would also want to learn how to make crochet jewelry, if anyone can help me with that! TY, your work inspires!
Honestly, I don't have any set instructions. I just take a piece of wire and wrap it/bend it in a freeform style....taking on a different design each time. I would suggest that you practice, practice, practice with inexpensive copper wire when first beginning to get the feel for the wire.
