I'm using 5" charms with scrap 1 1/2" strips (with 1/4" seam allowances). Started with hand sewing strips between diagonal half squares to get hang of it, but am now doing all by machine. Note layout can be zig-zag vertical or horizontal or a continuous line making a square within a square, or any other way you find the diagonals connecting. Its fun.

I am so partial to scrap quilts and this is quite different than most I have seen. It is so cheery and what a lovely gift.

These were squares, cut in half, with 1-1/2" strip between them and I enjoyed making it. I donated to a young lady who was going through Chemo. She loved it and is doing fine. Glad you like it....Em

I cannot find where is the pattern scrappy-DO-dah, not at Craftsy or in Amazon. Where could I find the directions? Gingerbiscuits I really cannot tell if the square are cut or just applique and quilted with a wavy stitch. Yes I would do it with charm squares if I had some, scraps is also fantastic because I have so many with the charity quilts I am doing.

How did you make this block? Did you cut in half each square and add a strip? or is it applique on top? I am very curious and love it. Don't have the book you've indicated and wonder...

Looks to me as if she cut each square in half on the diagonal and added a 1 1/2 inch strip to the center. Zoom in on the pink block with large rose dots, and you can see it was cut apart. Its s stunning graphic pattern and I would like to try it with a 4 or 5 inch square charm pack.
