I used a red velvet cake mix in a box, white fondant, red food coloring, marzipan, butter cream, and canned cherries.
What was your inspiration?
I noticed a new category for food entries at my local fair. I thought how awesome it would be to try something new. I love watching cooking shows and thought to myself, "I can do that?!" And I did.
What are you most proud of?
I am most proud of winning 2nd place at the 2010 fair for this entry. I really enjoyed making the marzipan roses and rolling out the fondant. It was a first with both of them for me. It worked out great.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
This project was a lot of work. Especially the roses. When using marzipan, you need to make sure you give yourself enough time to make them and let them dry so that you can put them on your cake without squishing them.
