Re-Piecing the Past: Civil War Blocks Then & Now »

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Unisex

Style: Traditional

Materials

100%cotton fabric

What was your inspiration?

Kaye England's repiecing the past class.

What are you most proud of?

I was really impressed with Kaye's sashing suggestions, but didn't like them when applied to my blocks. I simplified them to a simple two inch grid of mostly plain blocks. There are lots of half square triangles in grey and blue to represent the soldiers, a few pinwheels to represent conflict (with a little red close by), and two friendship stars. I couldn't find fabric that didn't die in the border, so I used one inch piano keys instead. Am still wondering how to quilt it, but I know that there will be vertical paths for sure.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Follow Kaye's advice. I loved her no press until done method, but did resort to pins at intersections.

Glad you like my quilt. It was fun to make and I found Kaye's sewing techniques challenging but worth trying. I too find the quilt busy, but somehow interesting.

Very nice, I was looking at this as a possible class but the quilt looks disturbingly busy...yours is the first one I've seen that "makes sense" . Beautifully executed, wonderful use of color, your blocks ring out and shine!

I love the vibrancy of your color choices that makes each block stand out as an individual and blend in to the whole at the same time. Marvelous ability is shown. You should be very proud of this creation!!

Thanks! I love bright colours and worked the entire quilt trying to keep them down to a dull roar. Then I hung it in the sun to take the picture and realized it wasn't dull at all. I do like it though.

My quilt top looks downright monochromatic compared to yours - and the whole time I was thinking how colorful it was.... Looks like we both need to reconsider our choice of indoor light sources :)

Thanks! I started off with the intention of using mostly florals, but then found I liked some of the tone on tones to make the blocks a little less busy.

thanks! It didn't take nearly as long to make as I thought it would, and used up some scraps.
