What was your inspiration?
I had purchased the 36 inch tall doll several years ago with the goal of redoing her costume to be featured in my entry with other Native American decor. This is not the original one I started but did not finish. I decided to do an all white with turquoise and silver beading. I have some fabric that has a wolf motif that I love so used it as the applique with beading all over. This is the first piece I have done with such concentrated beadwork. There are 100's of seed beads which I strung to attach. I had several Native American focal beads that I have collected through the years at Powwows that I have attended. Princess Sierra is now wearing those also.
What are you most proud of?
Princess Sierra was a finalist in the 2010 Fire Mountain Gem beading contest and is featured in their design catalog along with my profile. I really loved working on this piece even though at times I thought I would never get done stringing all those seed beads. I set my goal of getting her done by the entry deadline because I knew she would probably never get done if I didn't set myself a time limit.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
If you have a design you have been wanting to try, go for it. As I looked at past winners online and in the catalog, I didn't think she stood a chance but just kept adding and adding elements. She is far more embellished that my original plan. Be flexible and see where your creativity takes you.
