Pretty in Purple? Mauve?

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
The Machine Embroidered Quilt »

Instructions

Keep a watch on how the embroidery files translate to your emb. machine. I had some instances of part of the tack down being becoming part of the outer feathers/circle stitching.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Casual, Romantic

Materials

Cotton fabrics, Isacord thread

What was your inspiration?

Eileen's class

What are you most proud of?

I haven't lost touch with the embroidery side of my Bernina 830!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Think about how much fabric you will need to hoop & plan your purchase accordingly. If you are going to use the small files I think you could get away with 5 strips of the background & backing fabric but should probably get enough for 6 strips just in case. I thought I was going to use the large emb. files & the jumbo hoop but changed my mind & went with the smaller files & the mega hoop. Sooo, I have quit a bit of leftover fabric of the background & backing fabric (a totally busy Laurel Burch butterfly print).
I used the mega hoop because it is quite long & I could get 2 patterns done in one hooping.

This is so pretty. I haven't taken this class yet because my machine doesn't have embroidery capabilities. BUT, I just bought the new Bernina 750 so once I figure out the embroidery stuff, I may give this a try. Are those hourglass shapes of the quilt top actually pieced or is that some form of applique? I love the look of those graceful curves.

Congrats on getting the 750! You are going to have so much fun with the embroidery! The hourglass shapes are applique. The embroidery design does all the work - you just have to trim off the excess fabric and then let your machine do all the nice embroidery.

I have developed a passion for FMQ and the 6 inch throat on my current machine just isn't cutting it. LOL. I pick up the new machine on Saturday. I can't wait.

Aside from the usual quilting supplies, fabric, etc, did you have to purchase anything else (like embroidery designs for instance) to complete this class?

I love your colors. I have watched the lessons and I am ready to start, but I was having a little trouble finding just what I wanted in my stash. Seeing your terrific job in color selection has really helped. It's really beautiful.

Amazing - love what you have done in this course - every stitch looks so perfect - your fabric is great and the free motion work outstanding. Congratulations on this one.

My Bernina 830 & 430 have an embroidery module that attaches to the sewing machine to do embroidery or in this case machine quilting.

Gee Darns you are so lucky - my bernina is so old but at least it sews my quilts together!!! Maybe one day I might be able to afford a new one.

Thanks, Eileen - it is a fairly quick stitching project once I was on the look out for the embroidery to machine translation issues. I've done a fair amount of machine embroidery & am comfortable with my software & machine - anything can be fixed!

Oh Darns!! Just love love LOVE this! Ok the colours might have something to do with it LOL but seriously, this is WOW! Can't see you having a problem using up the extra backing fab... it's totally gorgeous too! Ok whats next??? Hey instead of fusible web (saw your note to SandiePink), have you tried Charlottes Fusible Web from Superior Threads? Check out their demo videos... means you don't get a "solid" appliqued piece, so it retains it's texture from the stitching. I haven't tried it yet, but have got myself some to play with... when I have the time and inclination ;-)

Thank you, Pam! Of course the colors of wall hanging have nothing to do with anything else in my house but I loved them! I'm going to look into the Charlottes Fusible Web - I have been using Lite Steam-a-Seam 2 for fusing applique but it does leave the fabric a little stiffer.

Darns I LOVE your quilt! I had NO idea that it would look that good! I thought of joining the class later on down the road. Does it 'feel' heavy? (I did one with Hoopsisters and it just was too heavy BUT that could have been the batalizer. Going to try another one with standard batting & Stabilizer. (Is the top, batting, and backing all attached when you quilted this one? Any way - IT IS A BEAUTIFUL Quilt!!!! :-)

Sep 09, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
Thanks so much, Sandie! Yes this is actually quilting using the embroidery design (top, batting & backing sandwiched to do the stitching). It does feel heavy & kind of stiff because of the stitching & the assembly using a reversible piecing with sashing. I think it wouldn't be so heavy if there were unstitched strips between the stitched strips. Also if I were going to make a larger quilt using this pattern, I would use fusible web underneath the raw edge applique & fuse after stitching. I can see where the edges of the applique could separate from the stitching with any kind of pulling or washing.

Thanks, Jean! I did the embroidery/quilting on my Bernina 830 & did the piecing on my 430. I wanted to leave the 830 set up for embroidery as I had another quick project to do.

Beautiful. I believe I will take the class. I have done a lot of embroidery with my machine but never any quilting. I need to figure out how to add some hours to my day. I thought when I retired I would have lots of me time, but that hasn't happened yet.

Thanks, linynp! The actual embroidery/quilting stitching for each pattern doesn't take long - about 10 minutes. I found it more difficult to line up the long strips when sewing them together - had to find a consistent spot to use to align them from strip to strip. Bernina does make great machines, don't they?

Embroidery machines are lots of fun. I bought mine a couple of years before I retired so I could get it paid for before retiring, Then you discover that you need/want many pretty thread colors and all kinds of stabilizers. I've tried embroidery on towels, T-shirts, quilting cottons, pot holders, etc. Way too much fun!

Yes, I would like to do embroidery on towels. Right now I am busy teaching, quilting AND travelling. Off to Egypt and Doha (librarians' conference there) next month. Need to fit in as much tax deductible travel as possible before retirement!!!!
