What was your inspiration?
I am a middle school teacher, and I organized a free weekly crochet class for students, parents, and teachers last fall. Originally, we crocheted scarves for Operation Gratitude (we made over 100 scarves!). After we shipped those off, we began making preemie items for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of a local hospital. We have made dozens of hats and blankets, and some clothing items. Because they are so small, they are quick to crochet. I used the opportunity to begin venturing into sweaters so I could learn the construction methods to apply to adult sized clothing later on.
What are you most proud of?
It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be to make a baby sweater! I thoroughly enjoyed it, and have made several more for the hospital, and a few for relatives also.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
If you are interested in crocheting for charity, there are lots of connections you can make online. Just google "crochet for charity" for starters. Or contact your local hospitals to find out who coordinates donations for preemies and/or cancer patients and give them a call. It is very rewarding to crochet for charity!
