Instructions

This quilt was totally strip pieced and was from a Terry Atkinson pattern book. Unfortunately, I don't remember which book. Great project for your strips.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Unisex

Style: Traditional

Materials

I used 100% cotton fabrics.

What was your inspiration?

One of my closest friends had been diagnosed with breast cancer and had undergone a double mastectomy. I wanted to create a quilt to be auctioned for the Susan G. Komen event to raise money for breast cancer. This was an event that had been created for the quilting industry. My friend had gotten very sick and the quilt was never entered, so I purchased it back from her and the check went directly to Susan G. Komen. You will be glad to know that my friend has been cancer free for several years now.

What are you most proud of?

The fact that I made this for my friend and the money went to a very good cause! Also, I love the quilting that i did. It was a curly heart design done with a rayon thread.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Be creative and use lots of different fabric. I used many different fabrics. I think the more fabrics you use the more interesting it becomes.

I just preordered the Aussie zig zag from your website. I have only done five quilts. This looks like a fairly easy quilt. You designed it right?

Hi Brenda, This is a fun quilt, however this one I did not design. I am just kitting it for the magazine. The one on the cover, my Island Breeze quilt (you can see a photo of it in my projects here on Craftsy), that one I designed. The Aussie Zig Zag is an easy one though and will be great one for you to make up fairly quickly! I will let you know when it comes in for sure!

Have a friend who lost her battle with cancer February 28th. Wish I had done something like this for her. Time didn't allow it. Beautiful quilt. Maybe I can do one in her memory.

Hi Brenda, So sorry to hear this, this is a loss that is never easy. I think that doing a quilt in her memory is a fantastic idea and most likely will be quite therapeutic for you too!! If you do make one, I would love to see it!

Thanks, Pat! She is truly a great friend. I ended up having all her friends participate in making a fabulous blue and white signature quilt for her while she was recovering. The quilt turned out fantastic and she loved it and all the sentiments that were written into it!
