Difficulty:

Category: Cake Decorating

Type of item: Food

For: Children

Style: Funky, Geeky, Eco-Friendly

Materials

cake base, frosted, covered in crushed gram crackers and light brown sugar; rice Krispie treat nautilius', frosted, covered in fondant, gumpaste tentacles and air brushed; gumpaste seaweed and underwater flowers; poured chocolate trilobites; jelly bean rocks

What was your inspiration?

This was 1 out of 7 centerpieces I created for my friend's son's Bar Mitzvah. He loves paleontology! Each centerpiece reflected a different vignette of prehistoric times or items: Dinosaur footprint; Amber (fosilized bugs in tree sap); Giant prehistoric dragonfly; Dinosaur nest with eggs; Prehistoric frog/lizard; Prehistoric nautilus; and a Mastodon stuck in a tar pit.

What are you most proud of?

I love the way the seaweed came out and the nautilus'.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

I wish I had had more time to practice the gumpaste pieces.
