Cake Decorating: My Favorite activity

My Favorite activity

Is this your project? Can you share instructions or a pattern with the Craftsy community?

Difficulty:

Category: Cake Decorating

Type of item: Food

For: Charity

Style: Whimsical, Cute

Materials

Cherry chip cake mix, buttercream frosting and marshmallow fondant.

What was your inspiration?

Cake decorating contest at my son's school. Since the theme was favorite activity, I just had to make some sort of quilt cake. We have a good friend who has been decorating cakes with fondant for a few years, so I asked him for help.

What are you most proud of?

That it came out cute. Won "Simply Elegant" and "Best Choice Theme" awards.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

It was really fun working with the fondant (kind of like playing with play dough). Plan out your pattern (my quilt was kind of crooked on the bed). It was really fun to do, but I was in a hurry and it is a little sloppy for my usual perfectionism. You don't need a special occasion for a cake, have fun and experiment so when that special occasion comes up it will be easier (and less stressful of course).

The one I modeled this idea on was a tumbling block. I didn't have time to do all those pieces so just did the squares. It came out really nice (and yummy too).
