What was your inspiration?

My older daughter wears only a few basic necklaces -- usually only a string of pearls. I thought she needed something "livelier" to brighten up that "little black dress" on happy occasions. When I saw these Black Lip shell beads at a bead show, I thought they would be perfect to liven up that basic black dress. I still knew I had to keep the design and the finished product tastefully simple if I had any hope that she would ever wear them. She did wear them (I'm sure just to please me) for my grandson's (her nephew) college commencement this spring. I may never see them on her again, but I think they do more for that little black dress than just a string of pearls.

What are you most proud of?

That she finally wore a piece of my jewelry!!!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

In the earliest days of my beading, I could not imagine why anyone would use anything other than 8 mm round beads. Now I hardly ever use them, but, instead, look for the unusual and take my inspiration from the beads, their colors, sizes and shapes. Look for something other than the run-of-the-mill and just GO with it! Follow an impulse, leave your inhibitions and the rule book behind!
