100% linen fabric carved focal button
What was your inspiration?
I had one cool, big, button in the shape of a fish which I'd had floating around for ages. It needed a home. I also had some leftover linen and a 20" sofa pillow that wanted a new outfit.
What are you most proud of?
This is a one piece pillow slip. It's one long rectangle overlapped. There are only two serged side seams holding the envelope together. No zipper to mess with, just one button to get it open or closed.
I got to use some of the decorative stitches on my sewing machine. I used my serger to cover stitch the hem, then added rows of stitches and a button loop. The button is heavy so I used a small square of plastic canvas to back it.
The fun part is deciding on how many rows of what stitching to use that will work with the fishy button and the neutral color of the natural linen.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Some thought should be given to sewing the button loop on. I tried to incorporate it into the decorative stitching and it's bulk threw my machine off right in center where it's the most noticeable.
Linen makes lovely stuff, but it IS a pain in the patooty to work with because of it's slippery, loose weave.
