Using cake, icing, Christmas lights, cardboard and a plastic cup I crafted a hollowed out Jack O' Lantern cake that actually lit up from the inside. It was a huge hit at my family Halloween party, not just for the novelty but for the taste too. It was pumpkin pound cake with maple and brown sugar and a cinnamon cream cheese frosting. YUM!
What was your inspiration?
My mother is my true inspiration for baking. I was baking with her when I was old enough to hold a spoon but what inspired me for this particular project was the challenge. I wanted to create a cake that was more interactive than the traditional cake. I wanted to make something that would combine my passion for baking with my skill for sculpture and I must say I am pretty proud of the result!
What are you most proud of?
Other than the fact that NO FONDANT was used in the making of the cake. I'm proud to say that this cake not only looked good but it tasted good too and I have a crowd of 20+ people who would say the same thing!
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Be prepared for mishaps, don't let those get you down. The fun of a project like this (besides eating of course) is the journey it takes to make it and everything you can learn along the way. It also helps to enlist the help of others. My brother was the one who helped me finally master the way to get the lights inside the cake without it affecting the structural support, look or feel. Thanks Chris!
