Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
The Couture Dress »

Instructions

I wanted to create a dress with the same look and feel as the dress Lady Mary (Downton abbey) wears at a garden party, but I did not want my dress to be "costumey"and too regognizable. I wanted to have the square neck, lace trim, staight skirt and play with the sripes. This class gave me the confidence to play with the pattern and tame it into something of my own that really fits well

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Romantic, Retro / Vintage

Materials

Seersucker and lace

What was your inspiration?

The dress Lady Mary wers at a garden party (Downton abbey TV series)

What are you most proud of?

The fit

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Take your time and enjoy!

The lace is such a classy touch. Love how the stripes are set on the top. the little belt sets off a lovely tiny waist. But, although your sewing room may be the messiest in Holland, it not the messiest ever! Mine would take that prize!

My grandmother used to make lace like that ~ all the pillowcases (and she had dozens) were decorated in lace. I go to auctions now and they can't give lace doilies away. I always think of the hours spent making them ~ I have numerous doilies in my home. Beautiful dress for a beautiful lady!

The minute I read "Lady Mary's Dress" I knew it would be a reference to "Downton Abbey." Looks like a lovely dress.

Thank you all for the kind comments! The lace I used is a vintage Irish lace collar from my collection of old lace. I am very happy that this dress displays the lace so well!

I have been collecting vintage lace for years. I bought this collar trough ebay a few years ago. It costed almost nothing... It is incredible nowadays that people do not know how much work, love and crafmanship is needed to create such a collar.
