It is knit 4 rows on circular needles, then purl 4 rows, repeat until you have about 11" or 12", the bind off very loosely. I think I cast on about 56 sts.

I made one of these with a different pattern years ago, and that piece has served me in myriad ways! I made it very open (size 15 needles) and the stretchiness of it, which I wasn't initially thrilled with, is great. I have used it as a hood, a cowl, and believe it or not, as a tube top over my swimsuit! It was so, so easy that I am always tickled when people compliment it. These tighter new are lovely, and I am in the process of making one now.
