Materials

Many many fat quarters, all stripes designed by Kaffe Fassett.

What was your inspiration?

The cover of Kaffe Fassett's book, Passionate Patchwork.

What are you most proud of?

That I was able to make it big enough when I ran out of fat quarters for squares. I then was able to find 1 yard each of 2 different fabrics and was able to piece the sides, top and bottom borders and make the shams.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Find stripes that you like and if it is all fat quarters, you can get 4 blocks out of each fat quarter and have a strip on the edge left over for making a pieced binding.

The quilt is 93" x 99". I counted and there are 81 blocks in it, 72 are whole and the blocks on the sides are halved. If each fat quarter makes 4 blocks, then that would indicate there were at least 20 of them. I did have a few left over which I made into a small baby quilt and donated. And I used 2 yards of fabric for the top, bottom and side borders, plus enough left to make the shams.

I love these bright colors. What size is this quilt and how many fat quarters did it take?

Thank you so much. I thought of another bit of information on the cutting of the blocks for this quilt. When you lay your fat quarter down with the 22" length going horizontally, the stripes should be horizontal also.

I forgot to mention that when you cut your 9" squares you will be left with a strip about 4" wide by 18" long. I piece those together to make the binding.

Each fat quarter can be cut into four 9" squares. With all of the squares lying on the table, make a diagonal slash from bottom left corner to top right corner of the two squares to your left. With the squares on the right, make the slash from the bottom right corner to the upper left corner. Then take the two outside triangles and place them together and the stripes will match. Take the other two triangles and spin them together so that the stripes match. Its very simple. In his original quilt Kaffe Fassett even married two different stripes together before he did the cutting as I mentioned above. I stared at my fat quarters for days before my daughter came over and figured out how I should be cutting them. So, don't thank me, thank Carmen.

I love this quilt. Something I would like to make. Love the vibrant colors. Awesome. Where can I get the pattern to make the squares?
