July BOM #3

A shell?
Blocks thru July

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Craftsy Block of the Month 2012 »

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Mod, Casual, Funky

Materials

batiks, Isacord thread

What was your inspiration?

I wanted to do something different with the modern wheel but not sure I was very successful. It looks kind of weird - maybe a shell or a snail? Might end up redoing this one when I see how much fabric I have left.

Oh my! How nice! What an interesting twist on the BOM. My blocks are so "by the book" . I Love this, especially the sea shell. Thanks so much for sharing. Wouldn't a whole quilt of the shells in different colors, just be so great?

Hmmm, shells in different colors - - rainbow shells? sea colors? batik shells on black? Could have a lot of fun with that idea - -

So so creative! I am so far behind now, but I get so much inspiration seeing the amazing blocks here! It definitely forces me to push myself a bit. Can I "steal" your Nautilus idea and change it up a bit for my batik quilt???

Darns, You English Paper Piecing Blocks are wonderful. The way you have depth as the path winds toward the tree is very beautiful. The other block is very creative how you made it seen like a missing piece to the puzzle. The Dresden Plate blocks are amazingly creative with the use of the Nautilus Shell and the quarter Dresden Plate. Wow!! I look forward to see you finished quilts.

Love the nautilus shell and in my favorite color and fabric, too! I am doing a seashore quilt and may need to copy this . If you decide to re-do it, I'll take it-LOL.

Hey Darns, I see a snail shell and I LOVE both your blocks, you clever clogs! I hear what you're saying about fewer height changes and I agree... but I still like this one the way it is. Lovely colours too! Like what you've done with the Trad version as well... but you "cheated" LOL, you only had to find 10 different fabrics! Love em both!

Thanks, Pam - I had to think of something for the traditional block - I only have 14 differen fabrics!

How creative! And oh so pretty. I thought you'd deliberately gone for a Nautilus shell and exceeded very well. Only thing I'd change is to turn the block. You might like how it's come out more. Great work!!!

Thanks, Jean - actually I had kind of a spiral in mind - it still might work for me if I quilt it with a spiral into the center - we'll see

Ilike the shell..maybe if you oriented it differently, with the 'opening' part down?

Good idea! I'll try that & see if I like it any better that way - if not, I can always try another block with fewer height changes.

Thanks so much! I think I would do the shell one with fewer height changes the next time - maybe from 7 in. down to 4 1/2 or 5 in - make more blades the same height

I think I get what you are saying, you are not as happy with the proportion of the tall and short ends coming together. I think it is lovely, but you may be right with proportionality in the future. Still inspirational pieces!
