Haute Tote by Nina McVeigh McCall's Quilting April 2008
Difficulty:
Category: Sewing
Type of item: Functional
For: Women
Style: Cute, Whimsical, Funky, Casual
Materials
basic sewing and quilting materials and supplies, cording, batting. I used a selected packet for fat quarters a friend gave me for the bright fabrics and complemented with black scrap from my stash.
What was your inspiration?
I saw the pattern in the magazine and marked it as one I wanted to make some day. I finally got around to it. However, my look was very different than the one pictured in the magazine because of my fabric choices and because I braided the handle with rough edge fabric rather than the finished bias strips--from "haute" to whimsical (happy). I like both looks, however.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
I found the finished bias strips impossible to make (or maybe I was just too impatient). Next time, if there is a next time, I will use either pre-made finished bias strips, start with wider strips so I can more easily finish them, or use a different type of handle.
