Lauren Kitchen's Cityscape tutorial over, and oaver, and over, and over again! Three tiers of decadent chocolate cake, layered with choc butter icing and then covered in ganache. All embellishment made of modelling choc as per Lauren's tutorial.
What was your inspiration?
I signed up for Lauren's class as this is so different to what i usually do (sugar flowers all the way). I love being challenged and I really was with this cake!
I was then asked to make a 40th Birthday cake. the invitations for his black-tie party were retro cartoon characters, so I thought I'd have a go at a Gotham Cityscape - more Dark Knight than Adam West.
What are you most proud of?
HOLEY MOLEY!
I was sooooooo out of my comfort zone with this cake. Where do I start? - Haven't ganached a cake before (Lauren uses buttercream, but I wanted any cake peeping through to be chocolate, earthy-looking).
I haven't made modelling chocolate before (and not sure I will again!) but after 3 attempts I got a batch to work for me... and then managed to spill half-set chococolate colour onto the batch and ruined it. Aarrrghhh! Into the bin and had to start again.
So what am most proud of - that I still have my sanity!! This is an amazing class and I have learnt lots on it, but sorry, Lauren, I won't be rushing to make another!!
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Research, research, research.
Watch the class ten times over before you start.
Plan, plan, plan and then plan some more.
Triple the time you think this wil take and double the number of builings you think you will need.
Be more organised than I was with your treatment of the buildings. Know what you're doing in advance rather than let the city grow organically. I will be clening off metallic food dusts from my kitchen surfaces for weeks.
