Going to the Chapel

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Other

Style: Classic

Materials

The rings are made from pink and blue solid fabrics in gradations of tint. Other fabrics include the hydrangea radiance collection from Wilmington prints. Gold lame' was used for the wedding rings

What was your inspiration?

This quilted wall hanging was created for the final round of the 2011 McCalls Next Quilt Design Star competition. The challenge was to create a quilt inspired by the lyrics of a well known song. During the previous summer my niece had gotten married and for weeks before the wedding my sister and I sang "Going to the Chapel" every time we got together. At the reception the bride had include it in the song mix. Everyone got up and danced and sang loudly (and badly) when the song came on. When I got the challenge I knew exactly which song would inspire my quilt.

What are you most proud of?

I have always loved the look of a double wedding ring quilt, but not making the curves. I designed this quilt to have the look of a double wedding ring but used a garden maze design to eliminate the curves. Also, the hands were difficult to design. I used my own hands as a model as I drew the design. I'm not an artist but I really like the way that block turned out.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Make it your own by designing appliqu motifs that fit your purpose and circumstances. This design could easily be translated into a full sized quilt. If you don't like appliqu, consider using pre-printed blocks.

Quiltsage says: I would be remiss to not mention my dear friend Julia quilted it for me. She did an outstanding job in a short period of time.
