Can you tell us about any special equipment or techniques that you used? Just the D3100 and a Yongnuo YN-468II on camera flash.

My first project, it came out pretty fine but the only thing I'm struggling with is the white-balance; who has the 'perfect tip' to nail that?

I find it's best to shoot in Raw and then you can change the white-balance in post to get the look you want. Hope it helps!!!

Great photo! I shoot in RAW so it's easier to adjust in post processing. Are you using Auto White Balance? You can change your the white balance on your camera.
