Share a little about the materials, processes and techniques used to create this cake: I was asked to make a family tree cake for Dorothy. Funny because that is my name too! But I had to put it on the smallest cake pan I had. 6 x 6 Well I did it! First I made the tree trunk and branches out of modeling chocolate by piping it onto a cookie sheet. Using several different colors blending them together. Praying that it would work. Before it started to harden, I used my exacto knife and started to carve the tree itself. Adding more chocolate to define the branches and the trunk I was able to get what I wanted. I let it set for several hours. I took fondant and made three banners for her three children and weaved them into the three main branches. added more chocolate to set the banners in. I then used thick butter cream in three colors to make the leaves. This gave it more dimension. I let it set in the refrigerator over night to set. I made Apples to signify the grandchildren. I put their names on each apple with black food coloring. (using a very small brush) I used small flowers for great grand children and a butterfly for the only great great grand child. So Happy 80th Birthday Dorothy. I hope I live to be as old as you. And to think I put all this on a 6x6 cake.
