I used quilting cottons, ribbon, an iron-on fusible, canvas, embroidery thread and fabric markers.
What was your inspiration?
I was trying to find something for my nephews for Christmas, and I wanted to give them something they could use their imaginations with. I decided to go with a pirate theme, and so I made the maps (that can be rolled up and tied closed with red ribbons), eye patches, and drawstring bags with painted gold "coins".
What are you most proud of?
These were so incredibly fun to make! I am proud of the little details, like the whales and the treasure trunks full of "gold" (French knots).
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Draw out your map plan first on an index card, and don't make it too complicated. Give the kids room to come up with their own ideas of where they're going!
