Edie, 1967 Coat (Vogue 7239)

Pattern Info

Instructions

I substituted the sew-in interfacing for fusible. It gets tricky with the seams, but check out my blog post for pics of the inner workings.

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Mod, Retro / Vintage, Funky

Materials

~3 m wool, 2.5 m china silk polyester, fusible interfacing, muslin underlining, 3 buttons

What was your inspiration?

Several things came together on this one...
1st I bought this wool fabric at a fabric market in Amsterdam.
2nd I won a pattern giveaway on a blog.
3rd Sew Weekly was having their 1960s challenge.

And, this coat was made to be made by me!

What are you most proud of?

I am so happy at how it came together. From the hand stitching/hand-tailoring to all the machine set-in sleeves. I only made one big boo-boo which was sewing on the sleeve to the wrong arm, clipping, notching, and THEN realizing it was on the wrong arm. Oops. I'm proud of getting the lengths right and being able to make a coat I will wear over and over again.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Maybe you can figure out a better way to finish the collar, but I had a bit of trouble with that part. Let me know what you think!

Great job! Tailoring takes time but is oh so worth it! Perfect color and great lining choices. Thanks for sharing! (And I might have drooled over that pattern when it was originally in the Vogue catalog. Went to the fabric store all the time then with my mom.)

Wow this is great! I think I have that exact pattern stashed away somewhere. Hey I once sewed a sleeve to a neck hole and didn't notice till I was done and held it up!
