I live in N.D. and it get right down cold here too. I also think home made mittens are warmer than store bought ones. I can knit in round with 5 needles, but haven't quite figured out how to do the thumbs or the decreasing when getting to the tops of the fingers. My mother made many mittens for us when we lived in Montana growing up. I wore them out. Some I even wore two pair at a time because my hands would get so cold when out doing chores. I hope I can find the pattern and maybe try making them. I like the idea of double knit anything, so many options and design ideas. Thanks for sharing.

This pattern is up for sale in my pattern store. They are very warm. They are done on 4 needles. The double knitting is not hard, just different. There are a lot of good You Tube videos to help you with technique as well.

Beautiful and unique! I don't need the mittens in FL but I would use the pattern to make fingerless mitts! Great job!
