Knitting: Diagonal Spiral Mittens

Diagonal Spiral Mittens

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Mittens and Gloves Galore »

Instructions

I get bored with plain Stockenette Stitch so I added an old Spiral Diagonal made with purl stitches, just to keep it interesting. This pattern will be my go-to mittens because they are so easy and just about any stitch pattern can easily be added to make the mittens interesting and different.

Difficulty:

Category: Knitting

Type of item: Accessory

For: Children

Style: Casual, Traditional, Outdoorsy, Classic

Materials

Wisdom Yarnes Marathon Zocks Phoenix, yarn held double. Knit two at a time on size 5 circular needles using magic loop method.

What was your inspiration?

Grandson #3 saw the mittens I was making for Grandson #1 and went to my sock yarn stash and came back with a skein of yarn and said, "If I was getting more mittens for Christmas, wouldn't they be pretty with this stuff?" Well, how could I resist?

Great idea! I just made a swirl beanie with a similar pattern and I want to make matching mittens-- this would be perfect! Do you think due to the swirl I will need to CO any extra stitches to keep the mitten the written size?

I didn't cast on any extra stitches, just knit to pattern and it worked fine. But if you think your swirl might need extra do a gauge swatch using the swirl stitch. This pattern is so flexible I think it would take a stitch pattern that draws together many stitches before it would need any real altering.

Very smart--changing up the stitch--adds a lot of interest. How old is your Grandson who selected this?

Thanks, this GS is 9, he likes Grandma's mittens and socks and often picks his own yarns, or at least specifies color.
