Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Art Quilting: Pictorial Techniques »

Instructions

I thoroughly enjoyed this course. Learnt quite alot about applique techniques. Will take this knowledge with me into other areas of sewing and quilting.

We are always learning something new.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Outdoorsy, Holiday, Whimsical, Casual

Materials

Cotton fabrics, thread, batting, monofilament, freezer paper

What was your inspiration?

After doing this course there was a photo of my son that his Dad and I have always loved. I thought it would be the perfect first step on my own design.

It could have been better, but having browsed other projects and websites of other crafters though this process, I have learnt so much more.

What are you most proud of?

This is my very first pictorial quilt design from a photo taken in 2003.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Jump In - as Wendy would say. Enjoy the ride, you will learn a great deal and be confident to try anything - at least once!

Wow! That's VERY impressive if that was your first go at fmq!!! I've quilted quite a few quilts with fmq so that part won't be new...but it still takes practice! Good for you! You really should be proud of that gorgeous quilt! I will follow the advice Wendy gives and do the practice piece. Thanks for the info...

(sorry) P.S. I haven't had much luck with monofilament thread in my machine so I hope I can get it to work since I know Wendy uses it a lot...hope there are tips for that! Did you have any trouble?

Wendy covers the thread very well. It's all in the tension. My first piece which was the class project was a trial but it was a god learning curve. If you made a sample piece and experiment on that before you will find you can play around with your tension and that will help. I didn't do that - too impatient. But this one was better. Doing this course gave me my first attempt at the free motion foot and that was a huge learning experience - Oh boy! I feel very confident with it now. Just relax and have fun.

Thanks! That's comforting to know that this was your first too! I'm very excited to get started! Do you think you will do another piece using a different photo? I love scrapbooking and photography as well as quilting so I thought this was a perfect fit and natural extension of all the crafts!

You will be fine, I had never done anything like this before. It has helped me try other things I would never dream of.
