Crocodile Leather Purse Cake

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Designer Handbag Cakes »

Instructions

It helped to watch the workshop once and then go back when I decided to begin the project. The lack of a template was a bit daunting at first but I'm glad Elisa showed us how to work through it rather than just do it for us. She is an excellent instructor.

Difficulty:

Category: Cake Decorating

Type of item: Food

For: Women

Style: Cute, Casual, Mod, Hipster, Preppy, Funky

Materials

The bag is comprised of a six-layer pound cake filled with mocha buttercream and topped with vanilla buttercream under the outer fondant layer. The hardware was made mostly with gum paste but also some of it was gum paste mixed with fondant just so that I could incorporate the color to flow in various parts of the bag. I wanted to use fondant I had left from other projects which is how I decided on the brown color. It was the most intricate cake I have made but also the most fun!

What was your inspiration?

My inspiration was a combination of the bag that Elisa has as her model and a Tory Burch bag that I own.

What are you most proud of?

I'm most proud of the fact that so many people thought it was a real bag. The details were amazing and I did not think I would be able to replicate it as well as I did. The instructor was instrumental in getting every detail outlined, I love her!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Watch the videos before you even begin....
