Creative Back for Mystery Quilt

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Creative Quilt Backs »

Instructions

Start with the left over topper pieces and work other materials into the mix.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Home

Style: Funky

Materials

left over fabrics from the top and leftover backing from other projects.

What was your inspiration?

Reviewing the Craftsy course, Creative Quilt Backs with Elizabeth Hartman. Part of the course was using up material leftover from the Top. I had made the 3 Part Mystery Quilt from McCall's Quilting (Jan to June) and love the colors and pattern so much, I wanted a Back that matched in color at least.

What are you most proud of?

The freedom of creating a Back that I could say was all my own creation. Plus that it matched in color at least to the Top. Loved working out the pattern and calculations to create this.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Go for it!!!

This is just so ironic! I just finished this very same McCall's Mystery Quilt top, except I made the Queen size (89.5 x 89.5). Because I haven't bought a solid backing fabric, I was considering doing a "creative" back after having seen the Craftsy class a couple months ago. WHen I came to look again, lo and behold, here's my same pattern! Now I'm even more inspired to do a creative back! Thanks for the inspiration!

I believe that I will start small by using this technique for the backing of a table runner then graduate to a lap quilt backing. That should give me a chance to perfect my method, then I will use it for doing a large quilt. Your quilt back is terrific. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you! I always get myself into a predicament with "Go Big or Go Home" attitude. Therefore the Quilt back instead of something smaller.

I did a full size quilt using the 20 of the BOM squares. With borders the size is 73 x 94, I recently posted a picture of the finished quilt.

Your quilt back is sleek, contemporary and beautiful. You have really created two gorgeous quilts, instead of one.

Love your back! (and the front of course) it is a great way to use those leftover chunks of fabric that would otherwise sit in a box waiting for the next crazy quilt or string quilt
