First block ever on machine!

Learn It

Instructions

This started with an old purchased stencil...like Cindy, I have SO many stencils over the past decades, and now a new purpose for them. This is the first time I've tried machine quilting, and first time trying out my new Brother 1500s sewing machine, so two learning curves going at once. I like it!

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Other

Style: Classic, Traditional

Materials

cotton muslin, cotton batting, polyester thread

Fantastic job. Incredible bananas, pearls, crosshatching and feathers. You are on the way to being a pro before too long:-)

Thanks so much...just read your profile, and I am a semi-retired quilter as well, so I have to hurry up and learn some stuff before I can't anymore! Your quilt is lovely. I am working my courage up to do something bigger than my sample practice blocks....

Oh my goodness, thank you so much....I just hope I can keep going as well as I've seemed to begin! Beginners luck doubts creep in sometimes....

Yes I DO extended workshops in Rancho Cordova which is just outside of Sacramento. I hold Design, Beginners and Linen Wholecloth Quilts. Check out the workshops section of my website!

Thank you so much...I've been doing this type of quilting by hand for years, and this is going to be so much fun, and a chance to get to some projects that have been on hold in the stash pile!

I am VERY impressed! First time...really??? If you were taking one of my Beginning Machine Quilting workshops the other students would have thrown you out on your heels! And you did feathers and pearls...seriously beautiful first time job. Congratulations!

Yes...but I have done so much by hand and am an artist by trade, draw ALL the time, so a lot just clicked in immediately for me. Your comments about muscle memory really applied here. I've been drawing my own quilting designs for years, and with the new sewing machine and your class, all has fallen into place. Now to find my speed and wait for my thread shipment from Superior threads....

That is amazing work for the first time! I'm intrigued about your comment that you are an artist and the muscle memory etc. I wonder how your experience trying to FMQ for the first time was different from mine - a person that has trouble drawing stick figures! I think you're not giving yourself enough credit because you still have to learn how to move your quilt sandwich and get even stitches etc. It's really a beautiful piece!

aside from misspelling "Craftsy" up there, I am pleased that I feel so encouraged with this initial, albeit, imperfect attempt. Photo was taken while block still slightly damp from marker removal, but really really am enjoying this new adventure.
