What was your inspiration?
This cake request was for a mother's birthday, and all she could think to ask for was a Coach purse themed idea. This is from a returning client and she basically said she trusted me with what ever I could come up with - So, after looking over tons and tons of pictures of coach purses online - I finally found one that I liked and well...this is my edible version of it!
What are you most proud of?
Well I have to say that I had a really good time working on all the little details to the purse. I know the Coach logo isn't perfect - but well you do what you have to do and this time I actually went looking for stamps or stickers with the basic body shape of the logo and happened to come across some raised stickers that came pretty darn close to get the look I wanted. I peeled off thier protective sheet and placed them on to a piece of foam, trimmed it out exactly to make the raised portion more prominent, and WALL-LA...I had a "stamp-ish" item to use on the fondant. Once I baked, shaped, iced and covered in fondant, I stamped it all over. Then I used some silver/pearl dust to paint over each of the stamped areas. After looking over it I wasn't very thrilled with it so I thought to make the matte & pearly areas blend better, I simply airbrushed another pearl all over the entire thing. Then I added the side pockets, brown straps, and simply started to add the little buckles & zipper bits when and where I could. I decided that instead of putting the long shoulder strap, the design would look better with short handles, so...I figured with the short time (day before due) I molded some out of my modeling chocolate, let it harden, and then wrapped it up with the matching brown fondant. Made the little "stitches" where I could and made a little "Coach " logo. I really had fun doing this little purse and would do it again in a heart beat!
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Don't do what I did on this one and forget to put your support boards under the cake before you start to decorate it - I was so excited about getting all the little odds and ends on it that I was 75% complete before I realized that my next step towards finishing the little parts - was to put the purse on the base cake...and well, it was NOT easy to get the board under the purse and NOT mess up any of the parts I had already put on. So think out your steps first - and stick to them! Don't be goofball - it could have gone REALLY REALLY BAD! Thank goodness it didn't! ;o)
