Classic Tailored Shirt

Men's Shirt

Men's Shirt

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
The Classic Tailored Shirt »

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Men

Style: Casual, Traditional

Materials

100% Cotton small checked shirting, black cotten thread, Janome Magnolia machine.

What was your inspiration?

Craftsy courses, which got me started in sewing; Pam's wonderful Classic Tailored Shirt cours, David Page Coffin's book on shirtmaking.

What are you most proud of?

Finished it! And I'll actually wear it! Definitely lots of room for improvement, but not too bad first time out.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Practice basic techniques first, know your machine, used quality material.

Thanks so much! I'm in the process of shirt number 2, made from a twin bed sheet set that had an interesting pattern! It was going to be a muslin to practice an alteration, but it's coming out pretty good!

If you are a new sewer, you are off to a very good start .The workmanship looks great. Sewing is indeed a fun hobby to have. Been doing it for over 50 years and am still learning new things. Bravo and can't wait for your next project.

Wow! Thank you! I think having a background in woodworking helped: attention to detail, following instructions, fixing mistakes...! I think I might get brave and alter the pattern a little next time, try to get that wrinkle off the front.

Thank you! Yes, I love the way Pam teaches, very thoroughly, and with humor and encouragement. I started learning through the Sewing Studio class by Diana Rupp, also on Craftsy (as well as quite a bit of reading), and didn't realize how much fun it would be! I really don't need another hobby, but my wife likes her new skirts! :)

Thanks so much Una, Jovia and Pam! Pam's instructions were really clear and helped tremendously with my first shirt. Although I know I'm going to be "modifying" more on the next one, I was pleased with how this one came out. It's a remnant shirting fabric I found at Joanne's Fabrics a while back that I was going to use on this project, and tickled I finally got one done! I'm wearing it to work today, as a matter of fact. Can't wait to start on the next one, and can definitely say I'm hooked on sewing (just need to find more time!). I've made skirts for my wife (from one of the other Craftsy classes) and that keeps her happy so I can do this more often! :)
