Cotton fabric, metallic fabrics, sequins, beads, braid, thin cotton wadding, buttons etc.

What was your inspiration?

Last year I made a wall hanging (photo in my projects) after seeing something similar at the quilt show where I bought my new sewing machine. I made a few extra little quilts (they measure about 6 by 9 inches, give or take) and gave them to friends as Christmas cards that could be hung on the wall and then put away for use year after year as Christmas decorations. My idea is to make another each year for the same people, with buttons on the corners so that the new quilt can be hung below last year's. I'll make labels to put on the backs with Christmas greetings and the year on them, which will cover up my less than perfect stitches! I started the first ones as my new machine can do decorative stitches and I just had to play with it. As yet, I haven't done any FMQ on any of them as I'm currently waiting for an open-toe free motion foot to arrive. Only one of the quilts in the pictures is completely finished as they need buttons in the corners in order to hang them, and I need to go shopping for some more!

What are you most proud of?

Being able to give something original and unique to my best friends and my family that they can keep from year to year (if they want to). It's difficult to know when to stop when embellishing with beads, sequins, braid etc, and I have to try not to go over the top, although I don't really suppose it would matter much if I did "gild the lily" too much - they are festive decorations, after all! I was particularly pleased to find some ribbon in a cake decoration shop with "Merry Christmas" printed on it.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Let your imagination run riot. I intend to abandon Christmas trees now, and go on to to make other pictures - perhaps snowmen, bells, candles - there's no limit to what can be done. After last Christmas a friend's son loved the Christmas one I made for his Mum and asked me to make one of these little quilts with an owl on it - a photo of it is among my projects.

Thank you - they are such fun to do! I didn't get around to making any new ones last Christmas (2012) but I intend to make lots for Christmas this year. It's a long way off, so I will have no excuse for not starting early!

What a great idea. Many thanks for sharing. I think I will try this for next Christmas. Can you believe I am already planning for next year.

They're very easy and quick to make - and you can embellish them as much (or as little) as you like. Having said that, I haven't found the time to do much more this year, so will start a lot earlier next year. I blame the BOM course!

Oh - I'm glad you can't see me - I've just turned lime green with envy! I'm sitting here under a quilt, in front of the TV, with a hot water bottle behind me! The joys of an English Autumn!

Yeah I Know what u mean. We left home for Arizona - brought my machine and the quilt BOM and I enrolled in Leah Day's class. Still not done the BOM's yet. I also have last year's Christmas Quilt I am finishing and my Fairy of Fire which is almost done. No Christmas Trees here this year - left them all in Alberta.

Never mind - I expect you'll find time before the next Christmas comes around. Is it warm in Arizona now?

Thank you - they're so easy and quick to make. I haven't started this year's yet because I'm so embroiled in quilting the BOM. Will have to abandon that for a bit, I think, or it'll be New Year and too late before I know it!

Oh Patz, I think these are the cat's meow! Is there some interfacing in them or are they quilted with batting? How do you finish the edges? I cant tell from the pictures. Really cute gift idea, thanks!
patz in suffolk on craftsy.com
Nov 07, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
Thank you, Sue! There's no interfacing, but I used some very thin cotton wadding (batting). I just "bagged out" each little quilt, slip-stitched the gap and ran a line of machine stitches about a quarter of an inch from the edges. That's all! Easy-peasy!

Hi Pat...do u hv the pics of the back where you stitch on the buttons? I m just curious how you do that? I am looking for ideas of how to hang my quilted wall hangings. Much appreciated :)

I just sewed a piece of ribbon as a hanger to the top of the first one, but decorated the front with buttons. Then I sewed buttons on the bottom corners as well so that the next year a piece of ribbon or braid could be used to hang the next one under the first by looping the ribbon over the two sets of buttons. Does that make sense? It's not easy to get the second (and any subsequent ones) to hang straight, but with a bit of fiddling about it's possible.

PS If you look at my projects page, there's a picture of a wall hanging I made last year (it's mainly green and gold) showing how they hang below each other, and a picture of an owl which (I think - I haven't been to look) shows the bit of ribbon at the top, as that was a "one off".

What a lovely idea..i agree that recieving something handmade is really special. I hv started giving close friends and family handmade bookmarks and now i hv started giving apple mug coasters (pictures in my project) to close friends but they hang it on their kitchen wall instead of using it as a coaster!! If i can make some apple coasters in time for Xmas, i would instaed of giving Xmas cards. Thanks for sharing Pat...just wonderful :)

Ive just come up with an idea, a birthday one, would make a lovely gift, and something that could be used everyday. just an idea. For special friends and family. I am going to make one for a friend but it will be a table runner, she is in much need of something cheery around her right now, and her birthday is in January. so better get to it, once the quilting is finished on my quilt, 5 out of 9 done. keep up the good work, why not sell them to a craft shop????
patz in suffolk on craftsy.com
Nov 05, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
That's a good idea - your friend will be cheered up to end by the table runner. Good idea about the craft shop, but I'd need to have quite a selection ready and they'd have to be a bit more perfect than the ones I've made so far. Perhaps next Christmas?

Love the birthday idea... wouldn't it be lovely for little one's to get one on their first birthday or even birth, and add one each birthday! Thru childhood, then significant birthdays perhaps?

yes Pam,NZ, I have made quite a few table mats with the childs name on them, you can look through my things. Today with childrens names being spelled very differently, its nice for a child to have their name written on it. most actually become wall hangings. as I put a sleeve on them anyway and the mum herself can chose what to do with them.

good idea, I did the same sort of thing with paper, and made cards for everyone, not sure they were appreciated that much, but im sure these are, There is a lot of work that goes into making someone a gift, as you have them in mind when making it, Good for you and btw there is nothing wrong with your little quilts, must check out the owl one. so this is why your bom quilt is being hurried. hehe
patz in suffolk on craftsy.com
Nov 05, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
Yes - the BOM quilt has ground to a halt just for the moment - I'm waiting on an open-toe quilting foot for my machine, but ordered the wrong one, which has had to go back. And I'm unsure whether to quilt the whole top or to do it one square at a time (which uses rather a lot more fabric). It would be easier to do it a bit at a time, so I'm very tempted.
