Materials

"Blitzen" by Moda (Gray) cotton fabric (discovered in the Magical Jelly Roll Class). Two shades of "Essential" 100% Egyptian cotton satin finish thread (Connecting Threads.com). Fusible fleece. Spray basting.

What was your inspiration?

The moment I saw this pattern I had to make it for my daughter. She has a very long dining room table. The wonderful colors and contemporary design got me going.

What are you most proud of?

This is the first time I worked with triangles. I am very pleased with the piecing and simple quilting.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Take care to accurately cut and sew all pieces and segments which makes joining the rows and then the runner much easier as all points must line up exactly for the triangles to result in a flat straight runner. For extra body and a bit of weight consider fusible fleece instead of batting. However, note that spray basting does not work well with the fleece.

Read the entire project and examine the layout diagram before deciding on your fabrics. I made assumptions about dark, medium, and light pairings and ended up wishing I'd purchased differently. I'm not completely pleased with the contrast in some of the segments. The runner came out nice but I think it would be better had I checked the diagram closer. In the end I also wish I had bought extra fabric - especially for piecing the binding.

Jean, had to tell you I went to Sharon's site and really enjoyed it. Found the pattern and now want to get the magazine. Have you ever seen her sew or quilt magazines? Can't wait to find one to check it out. Thanks again for your advise from your biggest fan in De! :)

just lovely! beautiful job and one lucky daughter! instead of using the potholders as potholders use them as table mats to set hot dishes on - no need for hangers then

Thank you and good idea. She can also use them to separate her non-stick fry pans throughout the year. She's a gourmet cook with lots of cookware.

Should say: fold long sides inward 1/4" (twice). Stitch the 6" strip together by hand or machine.
WasaNewbieJean on craftsy.com
Dec 06, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
This is the way I make purse/tote straps. I usually top stitch them 1/4'" inside both edges. They're easy to add when using a lining.

Dec 06, 2012    Flag as inappropriate
I looked up a pot holder with a loop. They said to cut a piece of fabric 1.25 "x 6". Fold long sides inward 1/4" twice the stitch strip by hand or machine. Near a corner, lay loop on pot holder with the 2 ends lining up with raw edge. As binding is attached to top side, sew right over the 2 loop ends. Attach rest of biding in regular fashion. :-)
WasaNewbieJean on craftsy.com
Dec 06, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
Hmmm, I thought of this. My problem is how do I get the binding over the loop? Good idea to google it. I'll check further. Thanks LadyBev!

Had the same problem Jean, finally had to carefully 'tuck' the one loop end into the binding before closing it, worked but very cumbersom!
DeGramma on craftsy.com
Dec 06, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
Ladybev, I think I tried this with the raw edges up under the binding (like you would do with tote handles) but when I finished, the loop was pointing down............yikes! What am I doing wrong? :(

See my first comment on loops.......I find them problematic too ;~( .....have watch a few videos & they just say "and finish with a loop" but don't show the details!

I think the runner is really festive and finding a pattern for an extra long table is not easy. What you learn when actually making something always brings up the pitfalls, but it's really hard going on just what you've figured out in your head from reading. Piece of cake making the second one. Super job!
