What was your inspiration?
I wanted to make a fun cake for Thanksgiving (2011). I remembered that my brother had recently been complaining about a Chipmunk running amok in his garage and thought this would be an ideal subject.
What are you most proud of?
The Chipmunk. This was the first animal that I tried to create out of fondant.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
I supported the head and body of the chipmunk with a wooden skewer which then was pushed into the cake from the top. The nuts were made using Hershey kisses and Caramel chews which I warmed in my hand and shaped into the top of the acorn. Then I glued it on top of the candy kiss with Royal Icing. The Acorns tend to be quite heavy, so I started from the bottom of the cake resting the others on top. I used a glue made out of powdered gumpaste mixture and water. It was most effective in glueing the acorns to the top portion of the cake. I took the glue with me to their home along with the cake in case any fell off.
