Pattern Info

This project was designed by Deena.
Info can be found at:

no real pattern- I used the monkey wrench for one

Instructions

I just made it as I went...no set pattern.
One I used the monkey wrench - Another I used strips, and the other I used a patchwork and a larger bottom border...that one had no pillow.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Children

Style: Classic, Cute, Whimsical, Casual, Funky

Materials

Cotton materials for the quilt-top, ribbon, fleece for the back, quilt binding tape, batting, thread, sewing supplies & tools.

What was your inspiration?

Needed to make something functional and yet different...so I came up with this myself-used the monkey wrench pattern for the blocks. This one was made for a girl and I made a diaper bag to match. I also have shown two other nap pads I made - one for a little boy- and another for another girl -although hers did not have the pillow built in.
UPDATE (2012) I found the dimensions: approx. 36" long x 20" wide
(pillow is apporx. 10" x 20")

What are you most proud of?

How Nice it looks and how happy the person who asked me to make it liked it.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

There is really nothing that you can't make...if you want it. You don't have to have a pattern already out there, you can make one of your own.

It is the block she used in the Child's Nap quilt. You can google "Monkey Wrench Quilt Block " and that will show you the exact block.

monkey wrench is the pattern that I used in the pink and brown nap pad - it is also called by other names ..but if you google it you will see it and get the pattern for free...

Cute! Looks like it could be made into a Quillow by adding a hemmed sleeve in the center of the mat. I love it!

yeah- I am sure it could be - if I knew how to do that...LOL - I think perhaps if i make more - I would add some straps to roll it up and carry it easier...

The best nap pad I had as a child was made by my mom from a worn flannell blanket... It was folded over several times into a nap size pad... It was faded but the softest thing I ever slept on... No one had anything any better !!!

Very Pretty! I made one similar for my son when he was in kindergarten out of denim look fabric, I put a little pocket on the pillow for tissue, a single fabric cover attached only at the lower corners, and fabric straps at the bottom to wrap around and tie when the whole mat was rolled and put away. Teacher loved it. son and daughter both used it and passed it down to a cousin.

This looks so cute, and is such a novel concept! I would like to make the pillow-nap pad, as well. I won't need a pattern. It will be easy to design. I just have to wait for my broken clavicle to heal (t-boned in car wreck 3.5 weeks ago-lovely pics of my projects AND wrecked car connected to my profile). MAN, I am SOOO in withdrawl!!! I am DYING to get back to my quilting!!!

ohhh so sorry to hear that - but I wish you the best recovery and get back to sewing soon!

Not to worry. The broken clavicle is a seat belt injury. Without it, I would be critical or fatal.

What a great idea. I can see adding a "waterproof" lining in this so that those little accidents don't go all the way through to the bedding underneath. Could also be modified with a more adult motif for the elderly folks who are incontinent. Washable waterproof mats are available at the medical care stores.

The 'waterproof' lining is a GREAT idea! Would be great for little ones to use outside in case the ground is damp.

I used a polyester lite loft batting - and I made the pillow out of polyester filberfill (stuffing)...it's not too hard to make - so good luck to you - and hope it come out great!
