Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Design It, Quilt It: Free-Form Techniques »

Instructions

I used bright, 40 wt polyester thread for quilting the ribbons. Then use 100 wt silk thread for quilting background fills in all of the spaces. Each space has a different fill pattern.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Funky

Materials

'Quilting cotton, polyester and silk threads, hot fix crystals

What was your inspiration?

This was my response to Cindy's background quilting exercise. Her squiggly lines reminded me of the ribbons on Libby Lehman's quilts, so I quilted my own version of ribbons. I then added the different background fills using some fills that Cindy demonstrated in class, other fills from Angela Walter's class and yet others that I wanted to try from other sources.

What are you most proud of?

I really like the texture from the background fills. They were very difficult to quilt because it is really hard to see black thread on black fabric.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Have fun!

I don't know if it is your intention, but the ribbon effects remind me of strands of DNA. Surely a celebration of life. Very pretty.

Not my intention, but now that you mention it, I see it. I'll just have to pretend it was intentional! Thanks!

I have a Bernina Vrituosa 153. Poor girl's in the shop now, but she'll come home when I get back from Houston.
