This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Vintage Cakes, Modern Methods »

Difficulty:

Category: Cake Decorating

Type of item: Food

For: Women

Style: Retro / Vintage

Materials

Buttercream frosting. Gum paste flowers. Brush embroider done on large peony. Royal Icing "cage" on bottom and top.

What was your inspiration?

I love Mrs Peters cake and wanted to see if I could make mine look anything like hers! This cake was great because it had some many great techniques you have to know. I can used the skills I learned in this class for all sorts of other cake designs!

What are you most proud of?

The Cage! My first one broke so I had to redo the royal icing and added more meringue powder and the second cage was very strong!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

This was just a practice cake for me so it took a few days between some of the steps. I would say to do it all within a few days so its all fresh in your head and the the frosting does not dry out!

Haha sorry I misread your post! The first cage I made broke into a million pieces and I thought I was going to cry because it took some time to make. I made up another batch of royal icing making sure to put lots more meringue powder to add to the strength and it worked like a charm! It was SO much stronger and was able to hold up to me moving it around a few times.
