Is this your project? Can you share instructions or a pattern with the Craftsy community?

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Home

Style: Traditional

Materials

Cotton fabric, cotton batting

What was your inspiration?

Saw a picture of some Kaffe Fassett designed quilts and decided to try this one - 600 pieces in this lap sized quilt - can't imagine how many in a full sized quilt! Again, my intention was to explore a colour progression, including the binding.

What are you most proud of?

The diamond points meet!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

This quilt requires precision with the cutting, with the initial piecing of each diamond, with the piecing of the rows, and finally with joining the rows. This is not a beginner quilt.

Very lovely quilt. I am working on the same pattern but in indigos and it is so interesting to see how each person interprets the pattern. Love the colors.

jmn111, you are a terrifically talented, and patient, woman! You're quite an inspiration to me. Thank you for all the information. I have a "trunk" of fat quarters that I bought (years ago) from Keepsake Quilting of lovely batik fabrics. I seriously think I'll be doing something like this with the fabric!

I've been collecting images of interesting quilts: http://pinterest.com/jmn111/quilts/ - I'm lucky that I can look at a quilt and see how it's constructed. I take a piece of graph paper then sketch it out; followed by a list of elements (and their dimensions)... I don't really need to purchase patterns because I can figure most designs out for myself. But if you can't, there are lots of lovely books available with wonderful ideas.

I didn't have a pattern - I had a picture I'd captured from the internet of one of the Kaffe Fassett quilts - and I went from there.

For the diamonds, I cut 3.5" strips from WOF (I used ~ 50 different fabrics - 2 diamonds in each - I cut from fat quarters and other scrap fabric that was large enough) - the diamonds are 4.25" wide and 7" long - I made a template of the diamond and used it to cut each of the diamonds. Then I made a template to cut the diamond border pieces - 1" wide, 5.75 in length, I trimmed the ends after I sewed the borders to the diamonds - I worked clockwise around each diamond. The diamonds are assembled in diagonal rows - I laid out the bordered diamonds on my living room floor to work out the colour flow, took a picture!, then carefully picked up the rows in order, put the diamonds in separate plastic bags and numbered the bags from one corner to the diagonally opposite corner. I pieced a 1" border to reflect the colour flow. The binding was also pieced to reflect the colour flow.

The quilt took 99 diamonds, there were 12 half-side diamonds, 14 half-end diamonds, and 4 corner 1/4 diamonds. Binding was 5 strips 2.5" wide WOF. Finished size: 44" X 62".

Well planned - it looks fabulous and well worth the effort and attention to detail you would have put into this quilt.
