Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Free Motion Quilting a Sampler »

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Home

Style: Traditional, Classic, Romantic

Materials

Cotton fabric, cotton thread for piecing, polyester thread for quilting and polyester wadding.

What was your inspiration?

Leah Day's course.

What are you most proud of?

The little fan things in the small triangles - they came out acceptably well (rather to my surprise). Again, the feathers were a pain! The tramlines were okay, but I didn't get them quite as even as I'd intended. Never mind - next time perhaps?

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

As with Block 10, it would be a good idea to take some time to draw the feathers on a piece of paper in the zig-zag formation first, to see exactly how they should be placed in the angles - I didn't! My problem is, I'm always in such a hurry to get it all finished!

Your selection of stitching designs is wonderful.

They are all the ones suggested and demonstrated by Leah Day in her class "Free Motion Quilting a Sampler". I learnt so much from that course. My quilting isn't very good when seen "in the flesh", but with practice I hope it will improve. Thank you for your kind comment.

Your feathers are terrific and I always like "tram lines'. I will be interested in seeing the final quilt.

Thank you. I'm looking forward to seeing the completed quilt too, but there's going to be a bit more hard work involved first! Three blocks still left to quilt and then I've got to put it all together. Will have to be stern with myself and do it before embarking on the new 2013 BOM!

I have not yet started BOM 2013. I ordered the fabric bundle and will start when it is received. Are you doing Amy Gibson's Sugar Club BOM.

Love the fabric and the stitching makes them stand out. In one word - beautiful.

Thank you - I must say it does look a bit more interesting with the "tram lines" in the light parts, but it really wasn't my favourite block. Thank you for your kind remarks.

Thank you - not my favourite block, by a long way, but it looks a bit better now that I've quilted it.

It's very nice of you to say so, but really the feathers look as though they've come off a dying duck in a thunderstorm!

You are making me think twice that all the different designs would make for a very busy quilt,,,yours is looking fantastic

I think this quilt is really a sampler, or at least a learning expertience - at least that's what I'm treating it as.

Love this one Patricia! Those wee fans are just perfect, perfect in their space, and perfectly FMQ'd, go you! Feathers look damned good too from this side of the world and under the magnifier. Well done!

Oh - goodness - put that magnifier away! As I said to 2Strings, the feathers look as if they've come off a dying duck in a thunderstorm! I'm quite pleased with the fans, though - they were comparatively easy.

It's so cool how those loops in the triangles make them stand out. I think your quilting is coming along great! Looks like your cat would love to sit on it. (;

Thank you - I'm rather trying to run before I can walk - patience isn't my best virtue! Yes - Rupert looks very interested when I put the blocks on the floor to photograph them (but he'll just have to look longingly!)!
