What was your source for this sewing project? Improvisational

What materials did you use? Coarse Weave Upholstery Fabric (brown with small turquoise and red weave), Embroidery Bee Design, Turquoise Cotton Linen for interior lining, Turquoise zipper. Machine Decorative Stitch in Turquoise thread for the carrying strap, and 2 metal key rings to attach strap to purse body.

What are you most proud of? I like bug images for embroidery work. Sometimes I use the same bee image in black thread to embroider white cotton kitchen drying towels--and they are cool looking and sell very well too. I give Carol Ann Waugh the praise for introducing me to decorative machine stitching. In this case the turquoise thread is more than decorative--it "heals" the raw edges of rotary cuts. HOW TO BUILDING THE STRAP: I cut a 3" wide strip of upholstery fabric, and taking it to the sewing machine I fold the right edge of the strip to the center, then fold left edge to center of the strip and put it under the presser foot, then needle down to hold in place. I zig-zag stitch in dark brown thread down the center of the strap. The end result is a 1-1/2" wide strap. Then I change machine thread to turquoise and sew a decorative stitch down the center of the strap (covering the zig-zag stitching).

What advice would you give someone starting this project? I use the same purse design over and over again, but each time in different fabrics. Note: a stiff upholstery fabric like this one doesn't need iron-on stabilizer to give it shape. However, I used iron-on stabilizer for the interior cotton lining--keeps the linen from wrinkling, stretching, or moving around. Also, I use same stiff upholstery fabric for interior pockets--because it gives the purse even more body.

I forgot to mention--this purse is 8.5" tall by 10" wide. The cross-body strap is 40" x 1.5" finished.

This is awesome. You have reminded me I need to sit still long enough to make myself a new handbag. Now, I just need to find the time.
