This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Sewing Custom Valances »

Instructions

I used our Home Dec In A Sec pattern #5286 to make this straight edge pleated valance. I added a 3/4" finished band to the bottom edge - this was cut from 2 1/2" strips of paprika colored linen.

The finished length for the valance was 10" including the band. The client wanted as much glass to show as possible so the 10" worked perfectly.

Materials

I used a graphic lattice print fabric. The toughest part was cutting it out! I will only mark this as advanced because of the cutting issues - the print had to repeat perfectly across the valance. Otherwise, stitching it up was a breeze.

What was your inspiration?

I love everything retro! My client really wanted something current, yet neutral enough for resale in case they decide to move.

By adding the orange band to the bottom edge, it really adds an eye catching design detail and we were able to bring in more orange in the window seat cushions.

What are you most proud of?

I was so happy that my client loved it! I stayed up late one night planning the cutting - it took awhile but I knew that it had to be perfect.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

I would advise you to take the extra time to plan this properly AND purchase an extra yard of fabric when working with prints. This way if you cut a piece improperly, you have extra fabric!

I am particularly interested in how to approach the 90 degree angle into the corner in respect of the board as well as fabric. I also looks like in front right that ther is less of an angle [i have also in the same room an angle of about 60 degree. I intend to put separate valance over the sliding door [3 different heights in the same room so thanks for solving that problem I intend to drop from ceiling height ]

This is beautiful!! When you do the bay window do you treat them as separate boards with separate fabrics?

You use separate boards that are placed end to end and you mount ONE valance that was planned to have pleats where the two side boards meet the center board.
