Arkansas Crossroads scrap quilt

Arkansas Crossroads Lap Quilt

quilt and back side of pillow
pieced label on back

Pattern Info

Pattern info for this project can be found here:
Arkansas Crossroads block »

Instructions

I should have specified that the 'pattern' for this quilt gives you the cutting and piecing instructions for the basic block. The quilt is built using it. You could turn the blocks or match them up many different ways and your quilt would have a different look.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Unisex

Style: Cute, Traditional, Whimsical, Mod, Classic, Retro / Vintage, Hipster, Funky, Casual

Materials

Left over fabric, batting, embroider floss

What was your inspiration?

I saw a quilt using this block on a blog and loved it so I searched for the pattern to make one.

What are you most proud of?

I used scraps from this quilt to make the pillow and a couple mug rugs. And I love the little pieced and embroidered dedication label on the back.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Thanks to patzinsuffolkuk for pointing out that there is a video here -
http://quiltingtutorials.com/basic-skills-techniques/4-patch-quilt-xs-os-awesome-quilt/
that will show you how to make these blocks.
This pattern has endless possibilities - have fun!

I love the quilt. Would it be easy enough to make it into a doll blanket? The colours in your quilt are fantastic!
difair on craftsy.com
Apr 29, 2013   Flag as inappropriate
I'm not sure. If you are trying to make a scale version it would probably be tricky to cut and piece. This quilt uses 2 1/2" squares for 12" blocks. If you used 1 1/2" squares you could probably get a doll quilt with 2-3 blocks across and down. I've never worked with pieces that small so I couldn't begin to give you any tips for construction. Good luck!

I think you did an awesome job, was this difficult to make? And as for Jenny Doan, I love how she breaks down her quilts and shows ways to make them. I have made a few from her website.

This was my 4th quilt. If I can figure it out I'm sure that anyone can. I used a lot of colors - just whatever I had in my stash - and it turned out fine. For the quilting part I just did straight lines. You can do it!!!

Love your quilt, If I use 2 1/2" squares for corners, what size is the block? the pattern is 3 1/2 and 6 1/2 square, would I use 4 1/2 " for the 2 1/2" ?? thanks
difair on craftsy.com
Apr 15, 2013   Flag as inappropriate
To the best of my recollection: the blocks are about 8" There are two types of blocks -the 4X4 block that consists of 4 rows of 4 2 1/2" print blocks and the "X" blocks that consist (at least in my quilt) of half-square triangles and 2 1/2" solids.

this quilt pattern is a fave of our quit circle and we are constantly cutting 2x2 inch squares out of any scraps as we make other projects ( they store well in a shoe box) we have also used a boarder of four wide joined to make a piano key boarder all around after sewing a 2'' strip of white to contrast it from the base of the quilt .... very effective and uses up lots of the squares that overflow the shoebox
difair on craftsy.com
Mar 15, 2013   Flag as inappropriate

I love this quilt and I'm considering it for my next project; however, I'm not sure if the connecting block (appears to be an "X") is the same block made from all white material with color inserts. Can anyone help?
difair on craftsy.com
Feb 08, 2013   Flag as inappropriate
The "X block" is actually (in this quilt anyway) made with half-square triangle blocks and 2 1/2 inch square blocks. If you look at one of the full size X blocks you would see (from top right to left) one 2 1/2 white square, two half square triangles, one 2 1/2 white square: next row is one half square triangle, two white squares, one hst: next row one hat, two white squares, one hat : last row is one white square, two hat and one white square. I know the process I used in making this quilt isn't the most efficient but at the time it was the only way I knew to do it. I hope this helps!

can anyone tell me how much white fabric was used? I want to make this quilt, I want to make sure I buy enough fabric.
difair on craftsy.com
Feb 08, 2013   Flag as inappropriate
I wish I could remember :( It is just a lap quilt and I used 2 1/2 inch squares (I used some jelly-rolls). I'm sure that 2 or 3 yards would be more than enough. White is so versatile- if you have extra fabric I'm sure you will find something to use it for : )
SuperMomPenny on craftsy.com
Feb 11, 2013   Flag as inappropriate
I did the math and you it has a total of 24 X blocks, including the 1/2 blocks. If each block is 12 1/2 inches you would get about 9 per yard, so 2 2/3 yards would make this lap size. I would buy 3 yards. If you were to make it bigger add 1/3 yard for ever 3 extra X's. Rather be safe than sorry. Good luck.

Just last night I was going through my boxes of accumulated 2 1/2" strips I've cut from many projects. I was thinking of a 16-patch block in a scrappy quilt but couldn't think of a good pattern. When I saw Arkansas Crossroads this morning, I knew it was "the one!" I will make mine with my pre-cut strips, so my blocks will finish to 8"; I'll just have to make more of them! Colors will be all Fall colors - my very favorites: rich deep reds, rusty oranges, greens, golds, browns, tans, and even some black. Instead of the white, I will use either a dark brown or black solid. I can't wait to get started! I love scrap quilts and this is perfect!

I also used 2 1/2 inch squares. I cut squares from jelly roll strips I had left from other projects. That's one of the great things about quilt patterns - the ability to modify them. Can't wait to see your fall quilt.

In using this pattern I find the 2 1/2" squares used for the four patch does not fit the 6 1/2" square. Is this a misprint or am I not understanding the pattern? Help!

very very nice, my stash doesnt have as many nice colors as in yours but this might be a good pattern to practise my sewing and quitting on. Also use some material purchased when the quilting bug caught me and bought material because it was on sale however had nothing in mind so it will be totally scrappy. a STYLE I have a hard time to do but I love this pattern. thanks

Just open your scrap bag and go with it! Live a little! if you don't have enough scraps, go buy a few fat quarters and add to it, Really, you can't have TOO much fabric..there will always be another scrappy quilt donw the road!

You can try exchanging fat quaters with other people that sew. It is surprising when you put the word out how many people are willing to exchange fabric for scrap quilts.

How do I work out how much fabric I need etc? Just a beginner....
aa.buchin1470763 on craftsy.com
Jun 06, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
I still do things the old fashioned way--take measurements of block and pattern pieces . See how big each piece is, draw it onto paper then figure how many pieces you can get for 45 inches wide and 36 inches long. Allow for seam 1/4 inch all around. This is old fashioned but works. Take for example 2 inches square would really be 2 -1/4 inches square..draw on piece of paper or graph paper-
aa.buchin1470763 on craftsy.com
Jun 06, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
I work it out on graph paper example--5inch is really 5 1/4 inch square -every 4 blocks you would have 21 inches wide so 21 plus 21 equals 42 inches wide. You would get8 blocks across 45 inch material and 6 blocks down for31 1/2 inches so you would get 48 blocks out of 1 yard of material. Work it out or draw it out-You will see. It works for any size. I know it is old fashioned but it works for me every time and I don't waste much that way.. Audrey

Craftyagain, maybe I am mistaken as I have never drawn out a pattern of my own but wouldn't the 2" square really be 2 1/2' sq to allow for a 1/4" seam on each side?
