Quilting: Angles & Feathers

Angles & Feathers

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Quick-Strip Paper Piecing »

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Home

Style: Casual

Materials

Batik fabrics, cotton & polyester threads

What was your inspiration?

Peggy Martin's class in strip paper piecing and Ann Petersen's class Beyond Basic Machine Quilting - both women are great instructors! They taught me to not be so anal about fabric selection & free motion quilting.

What are you most proud of?

This is my first real scrap quilt. I used up some leftover batiks that had been in a box for a couple of years. (And, of course, had to buy a couple of fat quarters)

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Be aware of the edge of the quilt when quilting the borders! I lost part of a few of my feathers in the binding.

The brown really sets off the orange! Amazing how this all goes together as a scrappy! Love it!

Thanks so much! I think I have discovered the secret to having a scrappy quilt appeal to me - each part of this one has one bright strip, one green strip, one purple strip and one strip of the palm frond fabric. They don't have to be exactly the same but I think I need some continuity from block to block to make me happy.

Hi Darns -- I went to the quilt show in Sisters, Oregon, on July 14th -- I was looking for an Angles/Feathers pattern -- nobody had ever heard of it! Did you make this up yourself?

Hi, Alyx, I did make up the name but the basic idea and pieced border came from the Quick Strip Paper Piecing class. Ann Petersen's class taught me how to free motion feathers. Lucky you to go to the Sisters quilt show! What fun! Deanna

I've started telling myself that I can't buy any fabrics until I FINISH something! We'll see how long that lasts - -

Thanks a lot! Normally orange isn't my color but it really worked in this quilt.

The more I look at your quilt the more I think I will do one in baby colors since I am getting a great grandbaby later this year. I do machine embroidery also but haven't got to the point were I think I could do a quilt. I don't even know were to get patterens.

These scrappy string quilts are fun to do! Just follow Peggy's instructions for the string quilts. I just used a two inch sashing around the blocks to make the quilt a little bigger and a pieced border to use up some of the smaller scraps.

Gorgeous!! What thread did you use for the feathers in the border? Love it!

Thank you! That was a purple Isacord thread. Since I do machine embroidery I have quite a stash of Isacord thread & it seemed like a good place to use it.

Thanks a lot! I used up quite a bit of my leftovers on this. Most of the batiks were left over from the Wildflowers quilt.

Thank you! It was fun to do. Since I tend to be really anal about color, this quilt was quite a departure for me.

Your string quilt is fabulous! It really proves the old adage that the more different colors and fabrics you use, the better they all work together. You're doing a wonderful job on your machine quilting, too - the feathers look great!

Thank you, but not much choice as the batiks were leftover from previous projects and I used what I had. I was surprised at how good this scrappy of a quilt ended up.
