Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Unisex

Style: Casual

Materials

flannel in a variety of colors

What was your inspiration?

I needed a quick quilt for my student teacher. This one I made in a week over spring break as her going away gift.

What are you most proud of?

The way the mix matched colors of all those flannels came together so beautifully!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Make sure you have a good sharp pair of scissors because all the cutting and fraying of those edges gets tiresome.

If you look at the pictures, the 4th one is the bottom (fluff side) and the last one is the top.

I'm making one for my old son that is all Crown Royal bags. This one will not have an X across each square, but a pattern that allows the Crown Roayl emblem to pop out of the center of each square. You do not have to X the squares, I just do it because it's quick. You can actually put a design in each one.

I cut the squares into 7 x 7 inches. I sandwiched a piece of batting between two squares and sewed and X from corner to corner to hold them together. I sewed them together with 1/2 inch seams (the bigger the seam the more "fluff") Be sure to keep all the edges on one side and the seams on the other. This quilt is 10 squares across and 12 sqaures down which makes it a finished quilt of 5' x 6'. Once it's all sewn together the fun begins. Get a sharp pair of scissors and begin snipping the edges all the way around. The finer you snip, the more it will fluff. Be very careful not to snip into your seams. Do this over the entire bottom (seam side) of the quilt. Easy!!!

I had a similar idea from no longer used flannel pajamas. I want to cut them in squares like yours and put them together to make a quilt. I have many pairs, many colors, and many patterns. I just don't know how to make a quilt. Now that I saw how lovely yours is, I'm anxious to find out how to make a quilt. Lorraine

I really love this quilt. It's the sort of thing I would make myself. Love the mix of colours and fabrics. Bet it's really warmto snuggle under too.
