Clean lines, simple design. This stunning bed-size quilt is constructed using easy-to-make blocks, and features a center star medallion.

100% cotton fabric, 80/20 cotton/poly batting, wool batting

What was your inspiration?

My triplet daughters and I made this quilt for their dad's birthday, A finish carpenter himself, he loves the colors, the design, the fact that it's called a Carpenter's Star, but he mostly loves that it was made just for him by his four girls!

What are you most proud of?

Made with all half-square triangles! No "Y" seams!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Use fabrics with a high contrast between light and darks to make the design pop.

I love the fact that it is 1/2 square triangles with such a spectacular outcome. I also love the name of the star and that it went to your husband who is a finish carpenter. Such a beautiful selection of fabrics and the longarm quilting is fabulous. Thank you for the inspiration.

This quilt rates a 10 in my opinion. The color choice and the quilting are fabulous. I found the book for the pattern while out looking for inspirational ideas and plan to make my version as soon as I return from a NE visit with my son and his family. I hope my colors will be as calming as this one and bring someone a jolt of pleasure when they receive it. Again...BEAUTIFUL

I am just a beginner in quitting. When I looked at this quilt it looks so hard to me but you have it marked as easy. I made a rag quilt on my own, and a snowman quilt for my daugther that I added a pillow and 4 cup coasters and last but not least a Steeler quilt for my husband. I made a big bobo on that. I thought I could just tie yarn in each square which where 10 x 10 to keep it together. The ones with the helment in it I did not put a a tie. So a year or so later when I washed it the batting became a mess because I have lumps here and there on it. Some of the tie came undone and followed the directions in the book on how to make the knot, but must have missed something.

Hi! Yes, this quilt is a great beginner project! It can also be tied, tufted or quilted. I'm sorry about your quilt! If it was tied, maybe it's time to un-sew... get a new "bonded" batting and remake the quilt! The batting packages will usually indicate just how far apart the stitches can be. Best wishes!

what a lovely quilt now how can you make this the center point for a queen size bed...I wouldn't do all that work just for that size....I love the colours. and your hand quilting design in the white blocks is well done infact the quilt is very well done .... what a smashing job well done ...

Thanks, Satin_n_lace, actually the size for this quilt fits on my king size bed (Evan's) with about a 6" drop on 3 sides, perfect for a coverlet over another blanket. A couple of the examples (Susan's, Renee's) have much larger borders, and fit a queen size bed nicely. I've seen this lengthened to a rectangle with additional top and bottom border strips, works great.

I'm not found of the colors but it looks so neat and well thought out. I think I'll have to give this one a try. The old quilt patterns are so much nicer than the new patterns (except some of the appliqu patterns are just too cute). Did you long arm or hand quilt the quilted blocks? I made a queen sized quilt for my daughter and have been hand quilting it. I don't know when I'll ever finish it.

Hi, I used my longarm to quilt all but Emiko's - but the motifs will work well hand-quilting also. Hand-quilting, no matter how long it takes=stitched with love.

I love the Carpenter's Wheel. I have made 6 of them. I really like the quilting that was done on your quilt. The leaf design is one of my favorites. I hope some day to get a house big enough to put a quilting machine in. I only have 725 sq.ft and use every room in the house except the bathroom to quilt. Thanks for sharing. Lowell ;)

I would love to know more about the quilting designs used for this quilt! I always freeze when it comes to the quilting. I like to free-motion quilt, but never seem to be able to decide what would look best on my finished quilt tops. This quilt is beautifully done!!! A true inspiration!!!

Hi, Nan, and thanks! For my lazy feathers, I chalk a center spine in a curvy S, but don't quilt the center line. Then I quilt teardrop shapes for the feathers, leaving a little space between feathers so I don't have to backtrack. I usually fill the feathers to the edge of the borders. For the squares, I chalk around a bowl, then fill in feathers on both sides of the chalked line.

I keep coming back to your quilt. The design does pop with your fabric choices and then of course there is the quilting. Quilting is my favorite part of a quilt. Yours is just magnificent. The carpenter's star is one of my favorite things then combind it with your gorgeous quilting, no wonder I return time and time again to see this quilt

Dannygirl, this is such a simple project to make, you can't go wrong! My girls and I made the quilt top in two days. Of course it took a bit of time to quilt on my longarm, and all four of us grabbed a needle and thread to hand-stitch the binding, then it was done a week following his birthday.

Thank you! I machine-quilted most of these for myself and for clients (all but Emiko's) on my Gammill longarm quilting machine. The cross-hatching, stipple and feather motifs can be quilted by hand as well.

Hi Deonn, the Quilting on this Carpenter Star Quilt is BEAUTIFUL! This is one of my favorite patterns to make and i've taught several classes to teach others to make this pattern b/c it is so EASY & pretty after finished. You really have made these BEAUTIFUL by enhancing them with your Quilting. Do you quilt them yourself? I've only done the 1/4" quilting stitch on each side of seams, not brave enough to go into all these intricate stitches you've done. Keep up the Show&Tell, this gives me more things to show my students.....

Hi - my daughter is getting married in November and wants block colours in cream, yellow, light blue and dark blue (doesnt want any patterned material at all) - and for her king size bed. How do I increase your pattern to a king size. I particularly like Renee's colours myself but have to get a move on to make my daughters quilt. Any assistance would be appreciated. Beris - Australia

We have this quilt on our king size bed as a topper over another quilt. The center star medallion and inner border fit the top of the bed beautifully. Add more borders if you need a longer drop, or I'd be happy to provide a measurement chart with pattern purchase, if you wanted to make the quilt using larger blocks.

I have just completed this quilt and i am thrilled. It was my first attempt at quilting and Deonn's instructions were very easy to follow. I just did stitch in the ditch wih mine as I didn't feel confident enouch to do anything else and didn't want to spoil it. I think I'm hooked now!

how do you keep the center points from buckling? i tried this pattern some time ago and the very center points buckled on me, is there a trick to keep them flat and even?

Hi, quiltygirl, very good question! Alternating seam allowances, fanning out the seam allowance when pressing, and then not overquilting through the very center of the quilt can help. I stitch in the ditch to outline each diamond, but try not to cross over stitching lines when quilting the feathers, which seemed to help.

Fabulous quilt and I looove your quilting on it, do you mind telling me if you did it on a domestic or longarm machine. I do not think I will ever be able to achieve such incredible results on my domestic, but that not the machines fault it is the driver!! Great work

Hi, Pamela, I quilted this on my longarm, but the feather motifs would work on a domestic machine, or even quilting by hand. I chalk a line for the stem, then quilt teardrop-shaped feathers around it. Thanks for your comment!

This is just a beautiful quilt. My grandfather was a carpenter from the time he was 15 until he passed away at 83. My sister and I are considering making this as a tribute to him (and to our Grandmother who did lovely "finish" work when handsewing).

Hum, yes I can see that quilting would be less complicated than on Susan's quilt. I am drawn to the more complicated but appreciate your advice. I have no interest in hand quilting but plan to study your work on Emiko's quilt.

I love the quilting you did. The comment by SuziBud got me thinking I need to make one but after reading you did this on a long arm I have second thoughts. I am just learning and feel the need to practice. I do not have a long arm and just learning. Your work is inspiring!

Hi, Artmomma, Thanks for your feedback. This is a perfect quilt to learn on - and the quilting motif I used in most of these examples can easily be quilted by hand or in sections on your home machine. Take a closer look at Emiko's red and blue quilt for more inspiration.

I made mine in one day!! Very quick and easy quilt to make. It's by far the largest quilt I've tackled so far. I'm not quilting this myself, sending it to someone with a long arm! I'll be making more of these, for sure.

Hi, Nan, and thanks! For my lazy feathers, I chalk a center spine in a curvy S, but don't quilt the center line. Then I quilt teardrop shapes for the feathers, leaving a little space between feathers so I don't have to backtrack. I usually fill the feathers to the edge of the borders. Works for me. I also practiced for two years before I was brave enough to try, now I love them.

Hmm, the center of the quilt is square (72" x 72" without the borders), but you could add longer borders to the ends to bring it to a day bed size.

Yes, I like to draw a chalk "spine", then quilt the teardrop "leaves" on both sides of the spine. Chalk just wipes off, and gives the image of a center spine, but without having to be so precise.

Thanks, Ka Ron, I quilted this on my longarm, by chalking a spine, then quilting feathers (a curvy teardrop, more like half a heart) around the spine. Some areas were quilted with a large meander stitch. Stitch in the ditch between blocks of color, to separate the design, or put in different designs in color #2. I just happen to like feathers.
