The first Stack n Whack book.

Be very, very careful & precise when lining up the stack of 8 pieces of fabric

Very interesting use of color and design, not your typical red, white and blue.

Thank you! The design was pretty much an accident - all depends on what motif you line up.

This just takes my breath away! I can't wait to get a few more skills refined and have a try at this! I bought a book called (I think) "One Block Wonders" and I think the process is similar... Seems a bit complicated, but that appeals to me! Yes, a good outlet for the OCD! Maybe Craftsy should do a tutorial for one of these! Please!?!

Thanks, Di4n4, it is a bit complicated but fun seeing what you end up with - always a surprise

Helpful hint for anyone interested in making one. As you cut the 8 sections, put EACH one in it's own plastic sandwich back and lock th top. That way you will always keep the right pcs together. I believe the book is still available at Amazon --- Author is Bethany Reynolds.....go for it, you'll be surprised

Good idea! If I remember right, I kept the pieces pinned until I did the sewing.

This is the most fascinating process. We call it the "potato chip quilt". You cannot predict the way the colors will land. You have to complete the block and then you cannot go to bed without making "just one more", thus the potato chip name. I always put a piece of the original fabric in someplace, border, back, corner, whatever. No one will believe you when you tell them it's the original fabric...there are a zillion variations. I would assume it would be next to impossible to duplicate the plan exactly. I just love your fabric - so exciting a result. Inspires me to finish the one I started years ago with greens, oranges, blue, sort of a Southwestern print with snakes and whatever. The stranger the fabric, the better the results. It's addictive!!!!!!!

You are so right that people will not believe the fabric you started with. People using the same fabric will not end up with the same quilt!

I keep coming back to have another look at this quilt... it's just amazing! I can't get over your clever use of the fabric, that the back is what you cut your pieces from. I like the fabric, but you've transformed it in to something so amazingly different! I'm just fascinated with it, just love it! Did you "waste" much fabric? Did you find yourself looking hard for the look you wanted in each block or did they fall in to place without too much help? This quilt really has me intrigued!

You do waste some fabric doing these Stack n Whack quilts because you have to get 8 of the same motif lined up in a stack. The biggest issue is the pattern repeat. If the motifs repeat every 12 inches is one thing but if they repeat every 24 inches down the length of the fabric you would need a lot! Since I barely knew what I was doing I just looked for a motif that was interesting & hoped that it would work when the eight wedges were sewn together. I found myself being really really obsessed about getting the same parts of the wedges showing on all eight of them - this meant I was doing some easing & stretching here & there.

Never heard of stack 'n whack (or a lot of other quilting stuff) but I sure like this. Sounds like it was fun to make and it sure came out great!

Thanks, former newbie, these are fun quilts if you enjoyed getting frustrated because you didn't cut on exactly the same thread for each of the eight wedges. OCD helps!

BTW, I think if you heart it here it shows. If you go to the general Projects tab at the top of the home page and search on "4th of July" you can see what others have done.

Thanks a lot! Not sure if I have the patience these days to get those eight layers lined up perfectly. Not to mention that I seem to have lost this first book --
